Smoke one for the Wilkins Ice Shelf

< * environment.newscientist . com /article/dn13530-antarctic-iceshelf-h
anging-by-a-thread.html>

They sky is falling.

Er, the sea is rising.

Rather, the temperature's rising.

Drink your liquor and hide your women!

< * en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilkins_Sound>

On March 25, 2008 a 405-square-kilometer (156 sq mi) chunk of the
Wilkins ice shelf disintegrated, putting an even larger portion of the
glacial ice shelf at risk.[2] [3] Scientists were surprised when they
discovered the rest of the 14,000-square-kilometer (5,400 sq mi)[4] ice
shelf is beginning to break away from the continent. What is left of the
Wilkins ice shelf is now connected by only a narrow beam of ice.

I used to have a subscription to NewScientist magazine, but I
cancelled it. They are far more concerned with being Politically
Correct over accuracy in reporting.

Check the interview with Nigel Calder, former editor of New Scientist, in
"The Great Global Warming Swindle".

Riiighgghhhhhhhttttttttt...

Ice chunks the size of the state of Connecticut fall off all the time.
Purely political slant and bound to help all those candidates running on the
global warming ticket. First they take away your right to carbon dioxide,
then it's your guns. Then they come for your precious bodily fluids.

It was more like 2 years ago, in 2006, and it was more than just
global warming.

You need to learn a sense of scale, Paul.

Fire up Google-Earth -- it's free, and it's cool. Look at Connecticut.
It's small, and insignificant. They could cover the entire state 3'
deep in CO2 and no one would notice. Really.

More fun with GE:

* Center-up on the mid-pacific. You can actualy turn the Earth so that
you can't see any land And that's just one one side. Land-based folk
are small & insignificant.

* Turn around to the other side (so you can see some land.) Check out
how much of the planet is covered in trees (we'll ignore algae &
ocean-based plants, for now.) Human cities are small & insignificant.

* Heck, everyone talks about China's Great Wall as being "so big you can
see it from outter space" (this is true, on both counts!) Turn GE to
China. Notice how small & insignificant this great man-made structure
is. WHile you're looking at China (turn to catch India, too) Look at
what a "devestating impact" 2.5 BILLION people have had on the foliage
in that part of the world.

* Spin around to Antartica. Check out Wilkins and how big "the state of
Connecticut" is. Woot.

* Have a cigar. Tour the world. Know your home planet.
