travelin humidor?

What is a traveling humidor? How big are they or how many cigars do
they carry? I saw one at the cigar place was about $200. They had
wood and metal looking ones--almost the size of a laptop. Somone told
me he brings a few Habana's back from Europe with the label bands
removed so they're generic no prob. How may cigars can you bring back
like this without customs going nuts?

Depends on how long you are planning to travel.

Simplest would be a Ziploc bag. More elaborate would be a Tupperware
or similar container that would hold what you intend to smoke.

Both will do well in the short term (a week?).

If you are going to take a longer trip and/or want something more
robust - or something to impress your friends with - you can spend
more.

$200 is obscene in any case.

There is nothing better than a Herfdor. It's a Pelican case with foam
inserts to protect the cigars.
It's indestructible and inexpensive. To be even more frugal try a
tupperdor.
More info is available at the ASC FAQ--

Excuse my double reply but as far as unbanding Cubans goes, I don't
think there is any real burden of proof for customs confiscating
contraband. If they believe they are Cubanos they can still take them.
Anyone know differently?

Thank you for the reply. My friend has a Csonka for $35 or so and it
holds about four cigars. Also mentioned this--because he travels a
lot: "No Cubans but I think 50 cigars or 400 cigarettes or so. It's
on your customs voucher when you return." Once his friend tried to
carry a box of Cubans from Mexico years ago and customs reached into
his bag and put the whole box of cigars under the counter. He said
wait. The customes guy said you can't bring Cubans into the US and
would incinerate them. My friend said right...one at a time.

Back when I was a "Road Warrior", I used a Sherman Traveldor, which held 18
in foam with a humidifier element. The case is made of hard plastic (PVC?)
and the ad's show it being run over by a truck. It's waterproof and it
floats (great for those who have been taught to fish).

It cost me $60 (now $80..but there might be an ASC discount) and it went
around the world twice. I still have it and it's still doing it's job
nicely.

I have the same Sherman, a gift from the wife.
I also have a Guardian, a gift from Uncle Mikey, made along the same
lines but bigger and set up to carry both cigars and pipes.
With the growing smoking bans (and death of herfing) I haven't used
either in years.

Mine is gray and it looks like I'm carrying the "Nuclear Football" around.

Something that travels well (small, luggable), holds humidity (often,
though not always, watertight) and an appropriate size to hold enough
cigars for a trip, plus maybe a few so you have choices and can gift
your wait staff.

> How big are they or how many cigars do they carry?

Depends on the length of the trip, and your personal preferences.

(NOTE: Pelican was first, but Otter has the better marketing folks.
They're very-nearly the same product.)

I use a [watertight] Pelican 1060, which is good for most trips up to
about 10 days. I put a few cedar lids (from cabinet boxes) in the
bottom to act as humidity buffer, along with a gel-pack "humidifier"
[sic], and carry bubble wrap to take up the slack when I smoke so the
remainder don't bang around.

That depends, punk. Do you feel lucky, today...? ;)

I have three, and use them depending on how long I'll be away from home and
the availability of cigars during my trip:

http://tinyurl.com/6zqb6t

I have the Cigar Caddy 3400, Cigar Caddy 3540, and the X-Treme 30.

(no shill, I just used this website as an example since they had all the
models I use on one page)

I have no clue. I usually bring my own when I travel. And if I buy any while
on the trip, I only buy enough to (re)fill my traveldor.

I have this one from "BEDBATHANDBEYOND" of all places. It's
really nice.

With this faux leather and wood box, you'll be storing your
cigars handsomely and have everything you need. Cigar box
not only holds six of your cigars, but also includes an
ashtray and stainless steel cigar cutter. With a magnetic
closure, your cigars will be kept safe and fresh. Measures
8" L x 5.8" D x 2.8" H.

It's only $15 but looks and feels more expensive.

Sounds like you already know what a traveldoor is for.
