Opus Rare Estate Reserve?

Reply from: Alex W.
Date: 28 Apr, 13:44

Yesterday, I spotted a stack of fancy enamelled metal cigar cases at my
local B&M dealer, each filled with three Opus X Rare Estate Release 1992
cigars in various sizes. I have never seen these before -- has anyone tried
these? What's the story here?

Supplementary question: what's a good price for these in the US? The UK
price is £80 for three robustos -- that's US$160!

They go for just under $100 here in the US. I have not tried them and
at those prices, probably never will. I was in a local store last week
and noticed several different cigars with a $30+ price tag. IMO, it's
just marketing BS. Take a cigar that normally sells for $5, put a
fancy band on it, call it a superduper extra rare special edition and
slap a $35 MSRP on that bad boy. You might not sell very many, but at
those prices you don't need to.

Yeah, I like Opus X cigars and am willing to pay a premium for an occasional
special occasion...but not that kind of premium.

Ray ... are you suggesting that an Opus or a Padron Aniversario or a
Ashton VSG is nothing more than a $5 cigar being sold at a much higher
price because of hype? Since it seems that is what your saying please
let us know which cigars they are before the hype so we can get them
at $5 a stick or ... well ... you want to keep the secret to yourself
so your deals are not ruined.

I understand.

For some reason I'm reminded of Tommy Boy where Farley says "if you
want me to take a dump in a box and mark guarantee on it, I will -
I've got spare time"

Yikes! I guess the "regular" Opus were getting too easy to find so they had
to come up with something more exclusive.

Fuente makes very, very good products. However, they have always had a
pretty mecenary opinion of their customers. They only release so many
cigars, retailers can't order what they want (you just have to take what you
get), some cigars are only sold at Xmas, and their prices are competitive,
but have never been low.

The "3 for $100" scam has been tried by other companies, Fuente isn't the
first. But it's always a special deal for only a select set of customers -
the very, very stupid.

Even I didn't fall for that "3 for $100." I did however buy the "4
for $140" from Havana Gold. Was that wrong?

I thought it was patriotic to spend all your money in these difficult times
for the American economy?
:-)

Nine out of ten times, this is a special deal for the very, very stupid
people, but every now and then it's a genuinely special offering (does that
me especially very, very stupid?), hence my query.

Of course Fuente does know that your average cigar aficionado is also a bit
of a magpie. Who among us does not have a collection of lighters, cutters,
ashtrays, tubes, cases and other paraphernalia we don't really need but
which looked oh so cool and desirable in the shop?
