Great posting, Bart, on an important men's issue. This is also an
appropriate forum to post such info where guys hang out.
I've been on about this issue for years, ever since I had a false
positive PSA test over three years ago. I went to a local Urologist
after a routine physical blood test came back slightly elevated near
the upper normal limit.
This guy asked me FIVE times in less than 3 minutes if I wouldn't go
"across the hall and let him do a needle biopsy..,it 'll just take a
minute." This guy's weird obsession to get that procedure on his daily
insurance balance sheet made me very reluctant to let him do it. I'm
glad I didn't, because I started doing some online research and asked a
friend of a friend, who is a Urologist, about the accuracy of the PSA
test.
This friend's Urologist said that there are basically 2 kinds of
prostate cancer, "one that will kill you before you can do anything
about it and one that will kill you if you lived to be about 125 years
old."
I waited seven months and repeated the PSA test. It came back
perfectly normal again.
There are too high a number of both false positives and false
negatives with this test to make it effective and reliable, in my
opinion.
Here'a a year-old link I inserted into a blog I write:

Pay special attention to the seventh paragraph before you rush into
any drastic decision.
