Lung cancer and lifetime risk

Lung cancer and lifetime risk

Smoking is the greatest known risk factor for lung cancer
and is estimated to be responsible for approximately 90% of lung
cancer in men and 85% in women. Lung cancer risk attributable to
tobacco smoking is strongly affected by the duration of smoking,
and declines with increasing time from cessation. Thus, the
estimated lifetime risk of lung cancer among former smokers ranges
from approximately 6% in smokers who give up at the age of 50, to
10% for smokers who give up at age 60, compared to 15% for
lifelong smokers and approximately 1% in never-smokers.

Hi Bruce,
It seems the word "smoking" is a little vague in this context.
Cigarette smokers inhale the smoke while pipe smokers do not. When I
tell a doctor that I smoke a pipe, they never tell me I should give it
up.
Best,
Tim

Hi Bruce,
I found a previous post by you in which you say that nicotine does
nothing but make you want more nicotine. I spoke to a
psychopharmacholgist out of Stanford about smoking a pipe, and he told
me that nicotine stimulates the dopamine receptors in the brain,
leading to a sense of pleasure and well being. I think you should
check up on this statement and verify it for yourself.
Best,
Tim

Describe the "pleasure" and "well-being" you get from nicotine.

Don't be vague. Don't call it a "buzz." That's meaningless.
Give it some thought.

Try to convince a nonsmoker it's something they should try.

The nonsmoker doesn't need nicotine to feel pleasure or
have a sense of well-being. Make your best case.

Bruce, you speak like you never had a cigarette?? Aren’t you kind of a
so-called hypocrite?

I used to smoke. There may have been some pleasure in the beginning.
Or not. Maybe I was rationalizing just as much as nicotine
addicts here do. But in the later years before I quit, I was
just maintaining. Fixing. Getting back to a normal nonsmokers
are always at.

You can describe all kinds of things about cigarettes, cigars
and pipe tobacco, but when it comes down to it, after you
get past the packaging and window dressing, smokers of
all kinds are just feeding the jones.

Once you've been taken in by a fraud, you learn.

Except if you're a nicotine addict. They just come back for more.

I haven't smoked for almost 32 years.

When I quit, I quit. I did not weasel out by taking up
cigars or the pipe.

Trust ex-smokers. They've been there. They know.

Bruce Watson smells of urine....

The Calming Of The Storm At Sea.

He got into a boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent
storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves;
but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us!
We are perishing!" He said to them, "Why are you terrified, O you of
little faith?" Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and
there was great calm. The men were amazed and said, "What sort of man
is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?"
