ASP meerschaum coloring contest anyone?

ASP meerschaum coloring contest anyone?

I remember P&T magazine had a meerschaum coloring contest a few years
ago. Why couldn't we do that? We could ask Sinan Altinok to make the
participants identical pipes. He could ship them all on the same day
so no one could get started early. At the end of the competition, say
3 months or whatever we decide, we could photograph our pipes and post
them on the ASP home page. We could designate a panel of judges who
aren't participating or we could just open the voting up to you guys
out there on ASP to determine the best colored meerschaum. We may
have to look back and see what the rules were for the P&T contest, but
that's no biggie.

Altinok has pipes for $79.95 plus shipping. He also has the ASP 2008
pipe, for $125, an ornamented Belge. I know that's a little much for
some of us, but you'll be getting a really nice pipe out of it, one
that you will have for the rest of your life. Here's an example:
http :// altinokpipe,com /detail.asp?product id=IK108 If you've never
smoked a meerschaum, they're very neutral in taste and very forgiving
overall. I like meerschaums, and now Sinan and IMP feature briar-type
tenons.

I'm open to any suggestions; the outline above was just off the top of
my head, and I'm not emotionally attached to it. I'll be happy to
take the lead or sit and back and shut up.

What do you say, fellas?

I think your idea has merit. I doubt that I would participate but I
would be interested in viewing the results. How long does it take to
color a bowl? Three months? Would one use the "coloring bowl"?

I like the pipe pictured, Colonel. However, the draft hole appears to
be on the small side.

I would, with question use coloring bowls, probably three. Load them
the night before, and speed load the next smoke, always with a dry
pipe. I would be in, but be warned. I am a meerschaum coloring Fiend

Is that based on the top view photo, Buck? Perhaps Sinan would drill
them larger if our order is big enough.

Yes, it's the latice bent billiard. Maybe Snan could tell us.

What an interesting contest! I would like to help you guys for the best as
much as I can. Drilling a bit larger wouldn't be a problem for a large size
pipe.

I was just about to email you, Sinan. I'm trying to get a sense of
how many we'll have participating. Thanks for jumping in!

Tentatively interested depending mostly on the cost of the pipe.

I think it's a great idea and I'd love to participate. However 80$ is a
bit too steep for me at the moment. I'd still like to vote, though, and
see how everyone else's turns out. Participants could also post
bi-monthly or so updates, just to show how they are coming along. It
sounds fun.

Hey Col.,

Just a thought - get in touch with Sinaan. He might be willing and able
to supply a special order of meers at a lower than normal cost for such
a project.

Best regards,
Bert

Ok,
a good idea for meerschaum pipers. I boiled my three meerschaum pipes
in coffee, got a nice brown color, placed them in a place to be seen
atop my pipe rack and sore never to put good tobacco into a meerschaum
for as long as I live. Did I say that I don't smoke cobs either? Hope
the suggested venture works for you. :)

I will be game for it once I sell a few pipes to cover the cost. I
