News Servers

Im looking for some input / recommendations for a good free or low
cost news server. Currently I am accessing the group via Google
groups since Verizon dropped all the Alt. news groups from their
news. I use Thunderbird for my reader but need a server to access the
groups
Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Try these...
I got most of these from others with the same issue as you -

Check out news.motzarella.org
It's free, and the registration takes only a few seconds.

Please configure your newsreader to access
news.motzarella.org
The port number is 119. This is the standard port number for news
servers and should be set as a default in your client. You also have to
configure your client to use the userid and password you will soon
receive by email.
If you are only able to select groups in the

motzarella.*

and posenet.*

hierarchies, your news client has connected to the server without
sending the userid and password. Please refer to your newsreader's
documentation for information on how to configure server access with
authentication or check the FAQ

In case of problems or questions don't hesitate to contact
support@motzarella.org.

Isp5 is another:
What is the server information?
Server Name: isp5.newshosting,com
Server Port: 119
Connections: 4
Bandwidth per Stream: 512 kbps

Or these:
www .easynews,com
www .giganews,com
www .news.astraweb,com /
www .newshosting,com
www .supernews,com
www .usenetserver,com
www .thundernews,com /
www .newsgroupdirect,com /
www .newsdemon,com /
www .newsrazor,net /

Also, news.datemas.de

http :// news.datemas.de/

Fast posting, nearly total selection of groups, and free.

Forte Inc., the makers of Forte Agent, have excellent usenet service
for a measly $3.00 a month. Well worth it as it carries far more
groups than the free services and is typically much faster in posting
and retrieval of messages.

If you want something a bit more inclusive and reliable than the free
ones, try the one provided by Forte Inc. It's about $3.00 a month and
you get everything, binary groups included.

news.individual, net (site at Berlin Free University) charges 10 euros
a year, or about $1.5 a month. Reputation is excellent.

If you are looking for a source of binaries aka pr0n, you should
be looking at those that charge and provide speed commensurate
with payment. If you simply want text news groups, Motzarella or
the other free ones recommended will do fine.

Cheers!

If those don't work for you, try octanews, http :// www .octanews, com / ,
they sell blocks and 15 gigabytes for $11.25 will last you a long time.

I still beat the drum for news.datemas.de. Text only, but quick uploads and
downloads. And free.

Yeah, but for all of last week, it was VERY flakey, no new headers
for days, couldn't post. And then it suddenly went OK. Go figure....
