Tax, Restrict & Humiliate

Without any fanfare, Gov. Deval Patrick signed an increase in the
cigarette excise tax yesterday, boosting it from $1.51 to $2.51 a
pack, effective at midnight last night.

Yes, I know, Robert. There is a point of diminishing returns.
However, the state average is something like $1.18.
Quite a few states could raise their taxes by a WHOLE BUNCH
and not get anywhere near New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts,
Rhode Island, Washington state, Michigan, Maine, Arizona, Alaska,
Maryland, Connecticut, or the District of Columbia.

It's free money. Not enough smokers are going to quit to make
a difference. The southern states are going to realize that someday.

Sure, some people will buy from Indians, but most won't. Hell, I live in
NJ, only about a 45 minute from Delaware. Delaware has no sales tax, NJ
has a 7% sales tax. I see it all the time in the Best Buy right up the
road from me where people are buying big ticket items such as flat
screen TVs when they could easily save the sales tax by ordering the
same TV for less money online or at least going to the Best Buy on
Concord Pike in Delaware. Despite the close proximity of tax free
shopping, many people in NJ and PA are too lazy to drive for less than
an hour to DE in order to save on sales tax, so I seriously doubt
they'll bother for less expensive items such as a carton of cancer
sticks.

Damn you are one plethora of useless information, Ms Negativity!
What's the matter, Twinkie, is your TV set broken? (Hi-Def, no doubt)
Nothing better to do with your simple mind and unproductive free
time.? LOL! Silly doofus.

It is true that many states are not near the apex of the curve. But a federal tax increase
would push high tax states such as NY, NJ and RI onto the downslope. Every dollar the feds
collected would cost those states MORE than a dollar in lost revenue.

According to lying antis "Studies have shown that for every 10 percent increase in the
price of cigarette, youth smoking declines by approximately 6.5 percent and overall
consumption declines by three to five percent." Between 1997 and 2005, average state taxes
increased 66%, from .40 to 1.18. As a result, smoking should have decreased by 33%. It
actually decreased 9%. How do you explain the discrepency?

Beyond the top of the curve, roughly $6 per pack, legal in-state purchases WILL decline,
because people simply cannot afford to pay that much. Here in Chicago, which has the
highest prices in the US at $6.50, stores no longer stock cartons. In response,
politicians raised the sales tax to 10.25%. Now suburban towns, notably Palatine, are
talking seriously about succeeding from Crook County.

If true they could reduce their taxes by the amount of the
federal increase. Still just as high monstrous taxes on cigarettes.

If not true, smokers screwed even more.

We're down to hardcore addicts. They forgo food for their drug.

They don't sell cartons but they do sell packs?

The nicotine addict will do anything for the drug.
