Ibanez Jem update

Posted a few days ago about wanting a Jem......got my hands on one at GC for
about 30 minutes. Nice, but NOT almost 2 grand nicer than the model I
bought....RG359DX. The trem will hold up fine, so that's cool. However as
one might expect the pups gotta go. I tried em with all my tube amps, Boogie
Maverick, 79 Marshal JMP 2204, Ampeg VT-40, 70's Fender Pro Reverb, and both
Tech 21 amps I have. These pups are just plain harsh.

I want to tap the coils of the new ones to have my stratlike tones when I
want.....what I'm trying to decide is what output will suffice. Thinking
Duncan PAF's or similar...OR GFS has a nice looking set bridge 14K....neck
10ish. Experiences please? Thanks

GFS Fat PAT's. I have them in a LP Xaviere copy, I'm happy with
them. Good crunchy rock tones, not harsh at all. They're also coil-
tapped, and the tapping chimes them up nicely.

I saw those on their site last night and leaning in that direction. Just
wish they had em in white, but hey, for the price! BTW, I have used many of
their strat pups in builds and have always had great results.

Evolutions ( the stock jem pups ) I'll go all white....hmmm maybe blue?

Nice axe. In my opinion aesthetics are half the battle. If its ugly I'm
not interested, like cars. Strats and Teles are sweet solid bodies,
there are very few brands that look cool to me. Ibanez and Yamaha are
another two I love the look of.

Here's one I cobbled from parts;

http :// members.optusnet,com .au/~startreks/gitar/Frankenez.JPG

Yamaha body, finally got a Yamaha neck for it tho. I will be refretting
it this weekend;-) I will be dropping a pair of these into the neck and
middle;

http :// store.guitarfetish,com /ovstserewocr.html

Need some high output ceramics to keep up with the Bridge pup, a 20yo
Shadow '59. Boy it growls. Gotta respray the body too. Can't wait to
finish this one;-)

Now yer talkin! The Frankenez is way cool......and I did check out the
bargain page of GFS, I might get a pair from that pile as well, just to
compare, heck they can't be worse than the schallers that came out of some
of my old Kramers. I'll have to find somewhere good to post some my project
wierdos....

Hey Grip, here are some RG320/Evo samples:

http :// www .myspace,com /jestersmilemusic
Check out "JesterSpace".
Clean & dirty tones...I also added the synths....

http :// www .myspace,com /xaivonface
Listen to "Big Trouble In Thailand"
I only did the guitars on this project.
Clean tones w/ delay...
Good example of the neck pickup w/ distortion....

I poked around and found "Stone Tiger" Love ambient stuff, I did a bunch in
the 90's, mainly keyboard and synth work as keys are my second thing. Did
your 320 come with the INF's as well? And did the Evo's make an instant
difference? I'm guessing so. Out of 25+guitars I have any one time, this is
my first one with this type of neck profile, amd I'm liking it alot! I'm
determined to make this axe sound like I want it to. This one is for playing
live, and the band does an incredible wide variety which is why I need to
tap the neck pup for a strat sound. Enjoyed listiening!

When I got it, the pickups were already upgraded.
It originally came with Ibanez Powersounds...never got a chance to
hear them.
I did have an RG120 with the INFs.
They sounded pretty good w/ distortion...
But I didn't really like the clean tone.
Kind of thin & glassy....
I like the Wizard neck too...wide & flat.
Hey, thanks for listening!

just something to try that I have found works out at least for me -
when you coil tap you lose the noiseless humbucker - it will hum just
like any other single coil - but I have found that instead of coil tapping
that (as long as its 4 wire lead) I wire with a toggle or push-pull pot
for parallel and series. In this way the noiseless quality of the humbucker
is maintained but (usually in most buckers) the parallel setting gets you
nice chime - very close to a single coil type sound. Then a push of the pot
or a flip of the toggle and its back to normal series and its time to grind.

So (for me) wiring up humbucker as parallel/series works out a lot
better than simple coil tapping - keeps it noiseless without any hum.
Hey - if I want hum (and tones that only real single coils can do)
- I'll just use single coils.

Anyways, try out a parallel-series setup on a humbucker if you have the time.
Come to think of it - when you wire it up as parallel it is kinda like
taking two single coil strat pickups (one reverse wound from the other)
and selecting the in between position (which creates humbucker).
Except both single coils are kinda close together in the humbucker.
well. yeah. it's kinda like that.

ok. this suggestion might not go over so well but I thought I'd mention it.

I have another Ibanez...AWD82T (semi-hollow, Strat shaped).
Put in some Duncans & had it wired BOTH ways.
A toggle for each pickup...
Down - full 'bucker.
Middle - single coil.
Up - Parallel.

Sounds great...many tone options!

This sounds like an even better idea, I'm gonna have to take my time and be
patient with this, should be done within a week or so, I'll post the
results!

Sounds like it's worth trying to me! I DO want a single coil sound from the
neck pup, but without the hum.
