I love my Epi G400 BUT...

I love my Epi G400 BUT...

The headstock really anoys me. Not because it says Epiphone, but
because it is like 1 1/2 inches longer than it needs to be. I am
seriously thinking of cutting it down...there is plenty of room AND it
might actually balance the guitar a little better too. What do you all
think. I have been working on setting this guitar up little by
little...and I got it so perfect right now it's great...super low (non
buzz) action.

I played with a guy one night,,, I thought he had a Gibson Les Paul
Standard,,,,,,,,,
Ended up ,, he had chopped the headstock on his Epi closer to a Gibby,,,,
stuck a Gibson home-made decal on it,, and swears it played better,,, go
figure........
Heck,, it was probably better than the Chinese knockoffs that are labeled
Gibson.........
Any SG is going to be top heavy anyway,,,, even the real deal.........use a
wider strap for the balance of neck dive......

I'll tell you...this Epi plays great. I've had many "real" sg's over
the years. Some dove worse than others. Generally the Gibson Sg
Specials have the least dive, I've heard it has to do with the tuners
and the fact that the logo is a decal and a few other small headstock
things. I found that to be true.
It's not just the dive (which I can deal with)..,it 's just too long
looking. I doubt if I'd really chop it up.

Get past the looks then..... I've got two older Epi acoustics( early 70's, a
6 & a 12) that are similar to the Gibby headstocks.. Then I have a newer Epi
Dot with the bigger headstock,,, yep , it bugs me too why they have that
extra wood there,, Why???,,,, but it plays great,, and that suits me
fine......

I know...I was just ranting. I am shocked how nice this guitar is. I
bought it used for $150. Had to fix two dings ...well...didn't have
to, but I did and they came out real good.

Hey I hear ya, I had one of the Epi 1966 reissues, and couldn't deal
with the headstock constantly diving on me. I sold for that reason.

I have bought and sold many SG's over the years. I find them my
perfect guitar except for the neck dive. The only 100% alternative is
to use an acoustic type strap that ties to the headstock...but even
though I'm 50...I am not ready to look like a dork yet!

I would leave it but if it bothers you that bad then cut it. If you do then
I advice that you go easy on it. Its easy to cut more but adding to it can
be a bitch. Just a little bit will change how it looks more than you think..
I dont think that theres enough extra weight there to affect the guitars
balance.

This one is not oo far off on balance, so it might help. If I could
find lighter tuners that would help too. In fact this has Grovers...if
it had regular Gibson Klusons, it might be enough weight saving.
The headstock shape just LOOKS too long either way, not even a
question of balance. Your right about not taking off too much...I did
that with a 66 firebird when I was a young dumbass kid...I still have
bad dreams about that guitar.

Balance in looks or balance in weight? BTW JT I think cutting it down is
crazy and if you meant weight, well 1 1/2" of wood isn't going to make much
of a differance. But it's your guitar and yo have to do what makes you feel
good.

Well....looks and weight I guess. As far as looks..,it is just too
long.

Just the kind of mod I would do, neatly finishing the cut end shouldn't be
that difficult. However, I would only do it if I could find a design that
left the inlay or badging on the front of the headstock looking tidy.

Would be imposiible to not cut the logo...but could possibly be done
where the logo is gone completely.

I had a look at an Epi LP this morning. I think you could cut off the whole
of the logo, but it might look unbalanced with the big tuners and wide
tuner spacing. You could go the whole hog - fill in the tuner holes, reshape
the head to something much smaller, eg PRS, use minituners and put an
overlay or several coats of paint on it to hide the filled holes.

I was actually thinking that same thing, based on so much room between
the tuners etc. We'll see down the road. I'll probably leave it be for
the time being. Thanks.
