LP headstock crack cost

LP headstock crack cost

I am in the NY area and have to have a headstock crack repaired on my 1995
LP Goldtop Classic.

If I want a REAL GOOD REPAIR done, functional and esthetic, by a good person
what would the going rate be
[the crack was at the "classic" spot, right below where the headstock meets
the neck].
I gave my LP to a respected luthier and after 6 month he finished the job
[have not seen it yet] and claiming since it was so hard to hide the crack,
it took time and the damage is 600.

What do you think?

Honestly, so much depends on the details of the damage that it's really
hard to say. I'm no tech, but it seems to me that it's easier (and less
time-consuming and costly) to fix if there's a complete break. That's
what happened to my Gretsch Tennessean (long ago, early 80s). At that
time, I think I was charged around $120, and it was a really nice
repair, some slight discoloration of the finish but otherwise no sign of
a break. And it's held up well all these years. Consider inflation
since then, and I guess you'd be at around $250-$300.

I'd say that's at least double the amount I'd be comfortable with. I really
can't take THAT much work.
I could have a whole guitar scratch built sans electronics and such parts
for about that kind of money, by a very good luthier indeed. If I recall
right, he repaired such a crack, laquer jobs and all, for pretty close to
200 bucks and woulda done it cheaper unless the insurance company hadn't
paid, not the customer.

Cheers,

Dee

I build guitars but never would consider trying to do a major repair on
somebody else's . Is there a possibility you could send it to Gibson for a
neck replacement ( or repair). It sounds you want a repair that could not be
detected. anyway just a thought.

Re: LP headstock crack cost

If the crack was clean and you can get glue into it then the repair should
have taken 15 minutes plus drying time. You shouldnt have to touch the
finish other than wiping off excess glue with a damp rag.. If its broken
completely off but not splintered then its still an easy repair. If in fact
the break was splintered then it might add up to $600? Its obvious that
you dont know anything about repairing guitars. The repair person knows this
and is ramming it to you. I think perhaps I'd jam the peg head up his
keester far enough so that I could tell him open his mouth so I could tune
my guitar
.

I guess that works if you don't mind a couple of extra screws in the
back of your guitar's neck.

Hey, that looks just like my Gibby LP double cutaway plus. Now that's a
nice guitar; I think I'd go about the repair a bit differently if it
were mine ;-)

Speechless......that looked like *total* shit. I had a Kramer somethin-
er-other come in with a headstock "repair" done with that gorilla
snot. It worked for about 6 months, then came apart. I ended up
redoing it with epoxy as the last ditch option since there was no
getting all that crap outta the wood. Had it been brought to me to
begin with there would be no need to have it redone since it would
have been done right the first time.

LOL...man, I think alcohol was involved in the repair as well...the
break looked nice and clean...the volute was still in one piece...such
a shame...but you know...he looks really happy and proud about
it...maybe he will open up a a guitar repair shop and start charging
for his skills...LOL...he wouldn't be the first butcher to go into the
stringed instrument repair biz.

I was laughing before I made it halfway down the
page - "The directions say not to use too much,
and they are right because Gorilla Glue will
expand to four times it original size..."
It's a good thing they didn't have any expanding
urethane foam, or they probably would habe
used that :-)
"Gorilla Glue is incredibly strong but we want to
make damn sure this works so now we need to
add a little reinforcement to our glue job. It needs
two screws added."
Why not just screw a steel plate across the break?
Add headstock mass, increase sustain, etc. :-)

The sad thing is, if it ever does give out, they'll be at your door
asking for the fix...and boardjunkie is right, there ain't getting
that stuff out of anywhere without a bucket of acetone...leaving G3 as
the last and only hope.

Frankly, I can't believe they forgot to add pigment to the glue...how
do they expect to blend this subtle repair?...sigh.

Still chuckling.

I think that without actually seeing the crack and without knowing all of
what he had to do, it's hard to judge costs. Broken necks aren't all the
same, by any means. You could, as others have suggested, get a quick and
dirty repair, or you could get an average job and either would cost less.
If you really wanted the break to be invisible, well, that costs money.
Have you talked to the luthier who repaired it about your feelings yet?

Don
