Upgraded Gumby

When I was on my big city music store run last weekend I picked up a new
set of Fender locking tuners for the Strat. Man, what a difference. I didn't
pick Fender over Sperzel, just that nobody had them. Sam Ash had one set of
the Fender's. The salesman said they were essentially the same and unless I
was dead set on Sperzel's they were fine. And the Fender's are actually
made by Schaller anyway so good enough for me. It had very cheap "vintage
Kluson style" tuners. The guitar would not stay in tune for more than a few
minutes.
Also I tung oiled the neck. It was unfinished and I had planned to do this
all along. Just had the time today for everything. One unfortunate mishap
though. I did the head stock face and the tung oil removed most of the
decals. I was afraid it would happen but I was very gentle and did it hoping
it would protect the decals. The Fender logo is damaged but pretty much
still there. All the other info is gone such as "Custom Shop body" and what
ever all that fine print was under the logo. And it now says Stratoca. Oh
well.
Also changed from .009' to .010's. I finally had the opportunity to install
the Curt Mangan strings I bought months ago upon recommendation of the store
clerk. Don't find them any better than the D'Addario's I normally use but
they are fine. Now I need the guitar dialed in for the heavier strings.
Actually it had a lot of fret buzz anyway so they might have pulled the neck
more in line.
I still can't make up my mind if I want to offer it to my guitar player but
I might take it to rehearsal Sunday and at least let him try it. Actually
knowing him I think he may be repulsed by the color anyway LOL. He finally
decided last Sunday that he officially hates the Ibanez he's been trying
out. If he took it back he won't have an electric tomorrow unless I bring
something.
It's kinda funny, all told I only paid about $350 for this guitar but I
feel very covetous of it. My Tele is a far more expensive guitar but I have
no problem lending it out. Yet I don't really want to let him even see this
Strat. The only one I have ever played that I honestly felt had anything
over this one was an '57 NOS. That guitar was a Holy Grail Strat.

Is it that "One of a kind" thing? I have a Similar Strat to yours that I
wouldn't part with because I'd never get one thats near the same again.

Mark

PS sounds like a keeper;-)

I'd have to say yes. As I mentioned before, it's a real Fender neck but the
rest is high quality after market components (well, except for those damn
tuning machines lol. But in all fairness I think the guy was going for a
true vintage look-yellowed knobs and pick up covers, 50's looking paint
color etc).

Yes they are the same. I looked them up and they are listed as
Fender/Schaller. I assume that means they are manufactured by Schaller to
Fender's specs.

Oh man, I can't live with out tung oil. It's just like the finish on a
pool cue. I use the regular 'ol off the shelf Homer Formby's Tung Oil. It's
so easy and almost impossible to screw up. The feel is so smooth and silky
and also creates the proverbial "fast neck". Actually I find it hard to
believe tung oil is not the all time standard for guitar necks.
This job was particularly easy because I didn't have to remove any old
finish.

The fender tuners look like the schaller most likley are the same. I've
used the Schaller's on my last guitar because could not get sperzel IMO
there just as good. As for the strings I would just use D'Addario's but now
what ever GC has a case cheap for I can't hear any dereference from one
brand to another. How is that Tung oil on the neck ? I've never tried it but
have used true-oil . I know Warmoth warranty is void if you finish the neck
with oil oh well most warranties are nothing but legal loop holes but they
all guarantee to keep your money. Anyway sounds like you have a guitar you
like that's what matters.
