Oh yeah, they have a certain sound to 'em.
I used .11 to .52 set for almost a decade and loved it. Also played a
lot of bass, and lesser gauges felt like spaghetti to me.
In recent years, however, I've been into a lot of 'expressive lead
melody' playing in which I play a lot of notes bent when I could play
them normally...and while having the string bent I want to apply
vibrato as well...gives a sort of freebased sound that is
simultaneously in tune (if done right) but on the edge always. Sort of
gives me some of the feel Angus Young has, you know, how when he plays
he shakes his whole body...sort of similar, all-encompassing vibrato
style. And...well, going for that kind of style/sound----just doesn't
work with thick strings.
BUT since I do love the way thicker strings go WROOMMM! when hit and
don't warble, my solution has been to use a nine set top and a .50 set
lows. The jump from .16 to .32 G/D is huge and did require some
getting used to, but now that I'm used to it I don't think I'll go
back to regular sets, I'll use this 'best of both worlds' set from now
on.
Cheers,
Dee
