Moved up to .11's

Moved up to .11's

Ive recently moved my string guage up to .011-.049 on one guitar and
now Im finding them really easy to play so now all my guitars have to
go up to 11's. Its a bitch really because they should really get done
properly - nut slots widened, truss rod tightened, intonation etc....
but hell they sound so much better.

Thats been my choice for many years. I actually play D'Addario EXL116s that
are .011-.052

I'm tempted as well, but yeah, with 8 electric guitars, the idea of
re-tweaking and filing nut slots is daunting to say the least. I'm
using an Ernie Ball nickel wound.010-.052 set right now and if I go to
.011s it would be nice to find a set that scaled the other diameters
proportionally.

Re: Moved up to .11's

Welcome to the club Vamp. Since most guitar come set up for .10s,
there usually is no need to tweak going up one string size.

Different models may vary. For me .11s are a compromise. I play .12
flats on my archtops, and didn't like the thinner tone I got when I
played the strat/tele with .10s.

.11s fatten up the tone, but still allow me to bend easily, something
I can't do as well with the .12s.

Re: Moved up to .11's

I wish that were my experience. Each guitar, except form my Tele, binds as a
result of moving up to 11's. I love them, but its a pain, and an expensive
pain at that due to having to omany guitars (can you ever really have too
many? of course not!).

I've never had any issues with binding and .011s on any of my guitars.

Yeah its a bit of a stretch for my fingers. They take some working
thats for sure but the pay off is that they sound so much better.

I recently put on a set of DR Tite-Fit strings. They range from 11-50,
I love the sound of these strings and I play a lot of low and clean.
Try em' you might like them. I was playing 10's before that.

Oh yeah, they have a certain sound to 'em.

I used .11 to .52 set for almost a decade and loved it. Also played a
lot of bass, and lesser gauges felt like spaghetti to me.

In recent years, however, I've been into a lot of 'expressive lead
melody' playing in which I play a lot of notes bent when I could play
them normally...and while having the string bent I want to apply
vibrato as well...gives a sort of freebased sound that is
simultaneously in tune (if done right) but on the edge always. Sort of
gives me some of the feel Angus Young has, you know, how when he plays
he shakes his whole body...sort of similar, all-encompassing vibrato
style. And...well, going for that kind of style/sound----just doesn't
work with thick strings.

BUT since I do love the way thicker strings go WROOMMM! when hit and
don't warble, my solution has been to use a nine set top and a .50 set
lows. The jump from .16 to .32 G/D is huge and did require some
getting used to, but now that I'm used to it I don't think I'll go
back to regular sets, I'll use this 'best of both worlds' set from now
on.

Cheers,

Dee

Re: Moved up to .11's

If you use your vibrato then you may have to widen the nut slots a little.
If its for your vintage Fender then they may have already been widened?
Funny but its few and far between that you see a nut cut correctly from the
factory. They just dont give a damn about what they sell as long as they
sell it. Check your intonation.

I play 9-52s...I have to get two sets and mix 'em ( set of 9s and a set of
11s ).

It helps when bending the thin strings to have 'em at 9s, IMHO.

Peace,
Polfus

9's are way too thin for me. My bending gets outa control on them. I
started being able to bend up 10's at least 2 notes. There was a
Wolfmother song I was playing that really required cranking up that
note and I got for sure.

Its wierd the way I went up. Guitar tech asked me what strings I wanted
and instinctively just said 11's. I dont know why as Ive always played
10's but thought I would give it a go anyway. After the initial wearing
in of the fingers, I'm lovin it. The callouses stay longer too.

Cool. I can bend 12's...but I can't put a vibrato on it like I'd like to.

As long as you can still pinch and feel a nipple, you're fine.

Peace,
