there's basically 2 camps when it comes to classic Tele sounds.
the 60's type sound - lots of biting treble from the bridge
the 50's broadcaster camp - higher wound bridge with more of a beefy P-90 type sound.
Most of the modern Tele guitars today from Fender and elsewhere
seem to do the trebly 60's type thing. But too many people think
this is the way a Tele needs to sound or is supposed to sound.
My own Teles have higher wound beefier bridge pups and yet I also
use 200K pots (which were actually marked 250k but we measured out
at 200k) and .047 tone cap. It has a nice fat sound to it rather
than the more modernized 60's treble Tele twang. (actually you can
make a Strat 'twang' it's just how you play it really). But yeah -
the metal bridge plate seems to bring out the wound strings more and
it also serves as shielding so that the bridge pup doesn't hum so much.
Anyways - get yourself a nice 'broadcaster' type bridge pickup and
it might change the way you think of Telecaster's sounding too trebly.
Also take the time to use 250k (or lower value) pots and stay with the
.047 tone cap. That's my 2 cents.
Oh yeah - another real secret to great Tele sound is the in between position.
The neck pup is almost an after thought for some people - but the neck is
really important when it comes to a nice blend in with the bridge for the
in between position sounds. That in between (neck and bridge in parallel)
is actually one of the nicest sounds out there from an electric guitar. (imho)
but you need a good neck pup to pull it off.
