Gave in to GAS again.

Gave in to GAS again.

The other day I went into the local guitar shop, a privately owned place run
by a super great guy. I have gotten a lot of good used gear there for a
great price. That is where my favorite G&L came from.
Anyway.....I never had a Tele, never even really played too many except for
my buddies '72 Reissue Thinline....whic IMHO, is a Tele in shape and name
only with it's two humbuckers and f hole half hollow body. So, I saw a very
pretty Strat hanging on the wall....I picked it up and it was sweet, it had
just come in and the tech there, who is closer to a luthier, builds his own
guitars and amps, said he had given it a setup and thought it was great..,it
was, but I have Strats....so I called a buddy of mine who has been looking
for one. Then when I was putting it back I noticed the Brown Burst Tele
sitting next to it....also new in the shop and just set up and the "small
issues" it had with frets were corredted. I played it..,it was
sweet...really sweet....so, now I own a Tele too. It's a MIM and I'm not
worried about that at all...the price was fantastic and it is absolutely a
very nice guitar....the setup is perfect and the action couldn't be better.
I got my Peavey amps from this place so it wasn't hard to hear how it would
sound for me. I now am wondering why I didn't get into Tele's a long time
ago....this is great.

Way to go! I have Strats and Teles.
And my 'go to' guitar has become a favorite tele of mine (which is shown in the
picture of my 'mini rig' posted recently).
The more you play the Tele the more it will amaze you.
Simple guitar - endless tones.

Anyways - good luck with it. They are great guitars.

I have been looking at Tele's also never really played much. When I grew up
a tele was a Cowboy guitar and that was that. I pick them up every now and
then and try them but I haven't found one I like yet. Oh well might have to
make one. Sounds like you got a good one nothing like new toys.

Well put. I tend to agree. Trebly mofo'. Killer for certain things (I
like it for some funk rhythm / m9th's, m13th's-- I designed one of my
patches in the Zoom GFX-8 to mimic the Tele w/ Strat) but all the time?
Not my cup 'o tea. Like Albert King's icepick tone, there's only so much
of it I can take. I think PC's just got new tone toy, joy-joy. Nothing
wrong with that at all! Time evens everything out...:-) mvm

Re: Gave in to GAS again.

To change the sound of a Tele all you have to do is change pots and a cap.
Theres nothing that says you cant use 100K or lower value pots. I used
anywhere from 3 meg down to 10K pots in guitars I've built and always had
good results. If I didnt like the sound I'd change one or both to a
different value.

there's basically 2 camps when it comes to classic Tele sounds.
the 60's type sound - lots of biting treble from the bridge
the 50's broadcaster camp - higher wound bridge with more of a beefy P-90 type sound.

Most of the modern Tele guitars today from Fender and elsewhere
seem to do the trebly 60's type thing. But too many people think
this is the way a Tele needs to sound or is supposed to sound.

My own Teles have higher wound beefier bridge pups and yet I also
use 200K pots (which were actually marked 250k but we measured out
at 200k) and .047 tone cap. It has a nice fat sound to it rather
than the more modernized 60's treble Tele twang. (actually you can
make a Strat 'twang' it's just how you play it really). But yeah -
the metal bridge plate seems to bring out the wound strings more and
it also serves as shielding so that the bridge pup doesn't hum so much.

Anyways - get yourself a nice 'broadcaster' type bridge pickup and
it might change the way you think of Telecaster's sounding too trebly.
Also take the time to use 250k (or lower value) pots and stay with the
.047 tone cap. That's my 2 cents.

Oh yeah - another real secret to great Tele sound is the in between position.
The neck pup is almost an after thought for some people - but the neck is
really important when it comes to a nice blend in with the bridge for the
in between position sounds. That in between (neck and bridge in parallel)
is actually one of the nicest sounds out there from an electric guitar. (imho)
but you need a good neck pup to pull it off.

I've always been a Gibson guy (and Gibson "type" guitars guy), but
I've always liked and have owned a few Teles. Just something "grass
roots" about them.

I still haven't found one I liked, after 44+ years. I finally broke
down and got a Strat last year, but I tend to play my Rics, Gretsch, and
Gibsons more.

I have 4 of them and wouldn't sell 1. Beautiful shimmer and chime like
Ric but somewhat different. Alot of strats I have played seem shrill
in comparison. I have yet to find a Les Paul I really like the sound
of altho I have a Jr I really love. Even had a PRS aniversary
model I sold Just don't like the feel I guess (altho I must admit I
like my Rickenbacker almost as much)

Glad you found one you like, Papa! I tried a number of them and came
across one 4 years ago which I fell in love with the moment I first
played it. A '69 with the original set up. Sweet. It easily gets
half the playing time at gigs.

I hope you are as happy with yours.

This was a guitar that had "issues" out of the box. Somebody brought it in
and sold it at the store....they take lots of used equipment. The guitar
guy there took it in back, did a fret job, changed the pots and did a
setup.....when I started to look at it, he told me "That is a sweet
guitar."...,it really is....I'm gonna have to play with this for a while
before I mess with anything....I like it as is right now. Plus, it has the
sound that works with a lot of the folk rock type stuff I'm playing now. I
love the neck pup too....very sweet, roll the tone off just a little and it
purrrs. Lots of different tones. Papa

Good lad;-) The wife is away so I went to the local fiddle store. There
was a 07 Burst MIM standard Tele and a 05 Burst CIJ 62 Slimline RI Tele.
The MIM was decidedly average but the CIJ was fantastic. My price
$1200au. Tis a pity. Sigh.

A buddy of mine has the MIJ model, he's had it for quite a while too. It is
a gorgeous guitar. Mine is a MIM one....but with just a little work done to
it, it is as nice as any I've seen. Great finish too. Papa

Yeah they are pretty nice if you like playing a dining room chair with a
neck and strings on it. I feel that the only thing that ever kept Leo Fender
from building the best guitar he could was his damned penny pinching ways.
Theres allot of things that could be done to improve upon the Strat and
Tele but it isnt going to happen as long as the current people run Fender
and G&L. Its a pity that profits come first and foremost.
