And the reigning champ is...

JAN Philips 7581A (6L6GC)
This is the mil spec version of the Philips 6L6GC. These are world class
tubes, bottom line. It has double mica spacers but otherwise looks and
sounds identical to the famous Sylvania 6L6GC STR. The Sylvania 6L6GC
STR is the tube that Fender requested to be made specifically for
hanging upside down in guitar amps. These are also the tubes that came
in original Boogies. The tone is very up front and clean. They do
distort nice though. Think SRV type tone when they do distort. They
retain the high end bite. This tube sounds very nice in blackface and
silverface amps, particularly Twin Reverbs. It's considered among the
best 6L6 type ever made. This tube comes in a white box with military
stock numbers on it.

Good $Px too!

re; / The Tube Store

5. How accurate is your matching?

We match tubes to be within 5% of measured plate current (that is, the
tubes won't differ from each other by more than 5%, or 1 milliamp in
20). Despite what many people may say, this is about as accurate as
power tubes can be matched. Tubes will always test differently from day
to day because of fluctuations in the power supply and "drift" in the
tube over time as it ages. When you consider that most electrical
components in a modern amplifier are built with a tolerance of 10%, this
is more than accurate enough. By contrast, common practice in the tube
industry for the last fifty years has been to match power tubes to
within 25%.

Too bad they're out of stock... forever. Last quad I bought
came from Elvie, your objet-de-fascination... my custy though
they were expensive at the time ($100 quad)... that price is
laughable now.

They didnt bother with the nonsense of matching tubes 50 years ago I dont
think? Why match tubes at idle when they arent doing anything except using
electricity for the heaters?
As soon as a signal goes into the amp any readings you might get would be
jumping around all over the freaking place. They surely are no longer
matched.

Sure they did ... maybe not 50 years ago, but 40, for sure. I can remember
looking for and buying matched sets of 6L6s, and yeah, I've been playing
that long.

Years ago quality control was much better and even the tubes you bought
at the drug store were much more likely to meet the spec for that tube
type. Fender and other manufactures special ordered tubes to tighter
specs, the first STR tubes were used in the tweed Bassmans and Twins.
Factory matching was also available from some of the manufacturers.
Sylvania factory matched pairs had an M suffix, I.e. 6BQ5M. Phillips ECG
bought Sylvania's U.S. tube manufacturing and many of the Phillips JAN
U.S. type tubes are Sylvanias built in the same plant. These include the
6V6GT, 6L6WGB & GC, 7581A, 6BQ5, 12AT7WC, 12AX7WA, 5751, and more.
