Boss FDR-1 Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Pedal

I'm wondering if anyone around here has used this pedal.
I stumbled upon it on the boss website looking for info on a PN-2 I'm
selling and was wondering if its all its cracked up to be.

I tried it briefly in the local store, and didn't like it. The OD sounded
harsh and very untube-like to me, and I couldn't see that I would ever use
the vibrato.

Here are the Harmony Central reviews. Typical wide range of opinions.

Well I have a Deluxe reverb and I can honestly
tell you that the pedal definitely doesn't sound
like a Deluxe reverb. But that in itself is alright
as long as a pedal can get you good sounds no matter
what it's intended to sound like.
The problem was this pedal just didn't have good sounds to it.
I was playing it through a Hot Rod Deluxe (which I'll admit is
not such a great sounding amp - at least any stock OEM unit)
and using a MIM Strat as the guitar. (I was obviously in a shop
rather than at home). I think it made the Hot Rod Deluxe
sound even worse which is a hard thing to do actually.
But who knows - maybe with a different guitar and a different
amp and a different playing style and a different day of the week
and perhaps different weather the pedal might sound good that day.

The only way to know is to try one out for yourself.
Just order from Musicians Friemd or Sam Ash or Zounds or
wherever and you have at least a month to trial it out
before deciding to return it or keep it.

I figure even if you can get just one great sound out of it
that you keep going back to - then it's a keeper.

Then again if you have never actually played through a Silverface
or Blackface Deluxe reverb (or even the current DR reissues being sold now)
then you might not realize how far off this pedal is from the actual amp.
If you can - go to a store that has Fender amps and play through the
Deluxe Reverb reissue amp (it is a nice sounding amp on its own and
way better sounding than the Hot Rod Deluxe).
And then after playing into the Deluxe Reverb reissue amp -
play through the pedal into some other amp. (or perhaps an amp close
to what you'll be playing with at home or in band)
You'll know the difference right away and can decide for yourself.

And make sure to take note of how much different (better actually)
the Fender DR amp's vibrato sounds from the amp than using the
pedals' modeling. But again - if you don't have an actual Fender DR
to compare it to then you might never know or appreciate the differences.
Like I said though - that pedal might fill a need for a few songs and
get the job done and then it's on to the next song in the playlist and
you can kick the pedal off. But if you are going to have vibrato as
an integral part of your sounds - then just get the Fender DR reissue
and be done with it. (or a nice used silverface is still very reasonable).

ok. that's my 2 cents.

I was seriously underwhemled with it, just trying it at the local big box guitar
store. I preferred the Bassman pedal to it, but not $150 worth!

Its a neat pedal but its not the hype Boss wanted it to be. Its not a
great sound but then again, sound is subjective to the listener.
I liked the Bassman Pedal much better, it has a warmer sound to it

People here are always saying that sound is subjective. I say a good sound
is universal and it would be rare to find open minded people who wouldnt
agree as to whether a sound was pleasing or not.

Keith, if you are talking about knowledgable musicians I agree. If you took
a good guitar player and gave him a strat with a cranked up Deluxe Reverb I
think most of us would agree that it would sound very good. Stick me on
stage with that rig and you wouldn't!..............................:)

While I like a cranked good Deluxe, I love a cranked good Super Reverb. The
Deluxe just sounds too small to me. The Super is quite a bit louder, which can
be a problem.

I'm thinking I might like a cranked Deluxe into a sealed cab, something I've
never tried. Maybe I'll build one, some day.

THIS PEDAL IS NOW REDUNDANT!

Spend a little more and get the Fender Super Champ XD 15w combo. You
will get all the sounds/fx that this and the Bassman pedal give you
and so much more besides...

I have a demo of these from NAMM '07 done by BOSS and they A/B both
against the actual amps. You can clearly see the shortcomings even
here. The Bassman is the better though. If you can find it I'll post
it up on my file sharing site - let me know.

I was interested in these pedals too, so glad I took my time
researching!

Oh, and I think though, there is a Youtube clip with the Basman pedal
through the Epi Vjr clone, the Harley Benton GA5 if you want a real
world reference. Search Bassman/GA5 or combinations.I may have this
saved too come to think of it...

These pedals are totally dependent on what they're plugged into. The amp &
speaker sound is the final determiner. Boss doesn't say what they used as an amp
standard to voice these pedals with. I have the Bassman pedal, running through
either a DRRI or an old BF Princeton and it sounds less like a Bassman than the
Pod or Valvetronix models. Never tried running direct....since they call the
pedal a "modeler" maybe direct is the way to go. That would suck.

Yes, I think any modeler is probably meant to go through some sort wide range
amp like a keyboard amp or powered monitor, otherwise results are fairly
arbitrary.
