Never thought I'd say this, but...

I finally got around to watching the Eagles Farewell Tour DVD.

I have NOT been a fan of the Eagles since Henley screwed over Felder, but I
kept hearing it was good so I did it.

It's pretty damned good, actually.

I like how they mixed in toons from everyone's Solo career's. It looks like
everyone got a fair share in, and that's somewhat unusual in the Eagles
group given the control freak Henley is.

Stewart Smith is a fine Guitarist. He can't replace Felder, but what
impressed me is he doesn't try to. He does his own thing with the Solo's,
etc... and they come out pretty good. I did think the double-neck during
Hotel California was a bit of a rip-off though.

If you don't watch it for any other reason, watch it for Joe. Joe was in
rare form during this concert, and reminded me of Joe in the old days. He
really makes the show on this one. And it was nice to see him using those
beautiful Carvin's he has :)

The musical performance is typical Eagles perfection, whether you like them
or not.

Rip off or homage? Y'know, on the "Classic Albums" of Queen's "Night
At The Opera", bassist John Deacon did not agree to participate at all.

Sometimes people just wear each other out.

Joe seemed pretty fragile to me. Hard livin's catching up to him.

Don't worry about Joe, He's bullet proof!

Sure, they're all highly skilled musicians. Too bad they don't use
their powers for good, instead of blandness. I'd rather watch a sloppy
performance of music that has real emotion than a perfect recital of
vacuous schlock.

Maybe there should be a "Behind the Blandness" cable show.

I caught a Bread CD recently, and have been enjoying that immensely.

What I like about that is all that fire behind the blandness. It does
not talk down to you at all, but it's extremely clever. Sorry, but I'd
almost take any random David Gates song over anything the Beatles ever
did. His pacing was better.

The challenge is to remember how that hit you the first time you
heard it.

I dunno. I still measure songs based on two metrics - fire from
"Burn Down The Mission" by Elton John ( don't kid me, that's one
hell of a song ) and "Climb Every Mountain" for air. Water just gets
in the way*. Yeah, "Climb Every Mountain", from "Sound of Music" -
go pick that one apart. Incredible. Air for days.

*until "Once In A Lifetime" by talking heads.

America, I would agree. But the Eagles were just close enough to form
to be useful. I don't think that is an accident - America was a take
on CSN&Y right before they got into serious expensive drugs, and
the Eagles were from the Byrds right before Gram Parsons took 'em
into "Sweethearts".

I think we presume there was calculatedness in the commerciality
of it all, but maybe it's just how people resolved things. you weren't
there, how should you know? Or me, for that matter.

But go review David Gates use of cadence against lyric, and get
back to me. The hook was always, always there, high wide and
handsome.

I must admit, your perspective is unique.

I was forced to see DG & Bread in order to see Steely Dan on their first tour. A
pretty screwy pairing, but not at all bad. After all, hearing David Gates crank
out all those famous ballads meant my girl was going to be pretty hot & gooey
afterwards......the things I think are precious you could understand.

My brother is an Eagles fan and I watched this a couple of years ago
when I visited him. I liked it pretty well. Production values and
musicianship are impeccable. Harmony singing is gorgeous. Energy level
not as high as I prefer.

I'd watch it again if I had the chance.

for xmas.

Another one you might like is the Fender Strat Pack - 50th anniversary
for the Strat. Joe Walsh goes hammer and tongs....

That's the one.

I'll check that out. I believe Gilmour is in that one too.

The only song on there that I find indifferent is Gary Moore. It really
is a great concert, Brian May and the Crickets was a real treat too;-)

Enjoy.

Sr. Year H.S. 1975...

The only Eagles tune I really ever got into (and still love)

"Already Gone"

Well, I heard some people talkin' just the other day
And they said you were gonna put me on a shelf
But let me tell you I got some news for you
And you'll soon find out it's true
And then you'll have to eat your lunch all by yourself
'Cause I'm already gone
And I'm feelin' strong
I will sing this vict'ry song, woo, hoo, hoo, woo, hoo, hoo

The letter that you wrote me made me stop and wonder why
But I guess you felt like you had to set things right
Just remember this, my girl, when you look up in the sky
You can see the stars and still not see the light (that's right)

And I'm already gone
And I'm feelin' strong
I will sing this vict'ry song, woo, hoo,hoo,woo, hoo,hoo

Well I know it wasn't you who held me down
Heaven knows it wasn't you who set me free
So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key

But me, I'm already gone
And I'm feelin' strong
I will sing this vict'ry song
'Cause I'm already gone
Yes, I'm already gone
And I'm feelin' strong
I will sing this vict'ry song
'Cause I'm already gone
Yes, I'm already gone
Already gone
All right, nighty-night
