Homeless guy at the bus station is a perfect analogy!
Wife #2 was an America fan, and I got to know a lot of the songs pretty
well, although my overall impression was and still is "ugh".
To me it comes across as faux hipness, like those guys never actually
came within 50 feet of a tab (and I'm not referring to musical notation
here!). Dewey Bunnell, who wrote and sang both of the songs you
mentioned, was by far the worst offender.
The only guy of the three I could really tolerate was Gerry Beckley, who
wrote "Sister Golden Hair", which was a half-decent song (nice slide
guitar!).
