Rape and murder are violations of people's rights, in a universal
sense. You don't get to vote on fundamentally wrong behavior. What is
in play is un-fundamentally wrong behavior. There is no way to twist
thought or word in such a manner to make out-and out rape or murder
acceptable.
This country was founded by people persecuted
for religious reasons, who just as soon as they could,
persecuted others for exactly the same reasons. So
we now have a tradition of tolerance.

Our tradition is to leave people to their beliefs. "Why" is simple - we
expect them to do the same for us.
