Why would I want higher gauge strings ?

Why would I want higher gauge strings?
Are the 9's for beginner and the 12's for advanced players?

9s are for 9-year-olds. 12s are for 12-year olds.

How old are you?

I'm an older gentleman. Right now I'm using 56s but come August I'll have to
find some 57s. I've never seen them sold anywhere. What will happen? Will I have
to quit playing for a year? What does Keef do?

From the the AARP manual -----
You have to switch to a 6 string bass, a 12 string, or a double neck. If
you make it past 65, it'll have to be a double neck with at least one neck
strung as a 12 stringer. Or do what I do, and thats play two guitars at a
time but don't get caught.

Better tone, sustain, easier to keep in tune, AND they are faster ( more
tension, string rebounds off the fret for quicker repickability). Of course,
you'll have to have your guitar setup changed: wider string slots at the
nut, more tension on the truss rod ( in small increments, with no string
tension on, please, truss rods break). If it's a floating bridge, say strat
or Floyd Rose, you'll have to increase spring tension...Small things like
that.
Is it worth it? Oh heavens yes...My Gibson's and short scale necks set up
with .011's; Fenders with D'Addario .0105's. Comparable tension, happy happy
tone...yesyes!

Sound or feel. Use what you like.

> Are the 9's for beginner and the 12's for advanced players?

Only for very early beginners, when you're building
muscles. But you might wanna play 9s forever. Try
10s, 11s, but switch back if you don't like it as well.

I tend to use "skinny top, heavy bottom" sets - 0.10 to 0.52,
except for the Les Paul which likes 0.10-0.46 for some reason.

A question for those of you that use light strings. I only use 13s, because
my electric playing is confined to slide, but my very limited acquaintance
with light strings suggests they have a bit more "twang", while heavy
strings sound "thicker". Would this be right?

I don't notice that much difference in sound; to me it's more a matter
of feel.

Amen.

Jimmy Page uses 9s...and he sounds pretty heavy to me; Billy Gibbons uses
8s...same thing with his tone. And Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath uses a thin
banjo string for his top string... . it s like a 7 or 6 or something...he
sounds damn heavy to me as well .

Peace,
Polfus

Tony Iommi is a great example of how you can make thin strings sound
fat. If you look at the spec of the pickups he uses you'll see where
his tone comes from. Probably the highest dc resistance figure I've
seen. Suppose he needs thin strings to help with his dodgy finger.
