Looking at a guitar with truss-rod damage

http :// cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item(0225945969

Is this too much of a risk? The body is in pretty bad nick. The
problem is not knowing what is wrong with the truss rod - don't know
whether it's a cheap fix, an expensive fix, playable anyway or just
completely f*cked.

My instincts are telling me to steer clear but a nagging part keeps
thinking I might get a cheap Strat...

Hard to tell since the owner doesn't seem to know whats up with it.
Sounds like its stripped, and if its the nut thats stripped you could
replace it if the stripped one comes off ok. If its the rod threads
stripped then fuck it. I don't know why people piss with a truss rod
when they have no idea what it does.......

He does say that it was sold to a 'top pro guitar man'. I assume if it was
an easy fix, he would have done it!

Then, again, you could easily fit a new neck ;)

If the action is low then there's tension on the rod, right? Does
that make any sense as described in the ad? Also, doesn't the body
look like it's been fatigued? The wear looks too perfect for my
liking.

Re: Looking at a guitar with truss-rod damage

Yeah. Thats not natural wear. If the neck is straight then I dont think that
I would worry too much about the truss rod. For a higher action(say the
frets are rattling) you'd raise the saddles and cut a new nut with shallower
slots. If the price stays low then you might get a steal. As was mentioned .
Most people dont have a clue as to the truss rods function and will stay
clear of the guitar because of its damage.

Re: Looking at a guitar with truss-rod damage

Spirit,

You don't raise or lower the action with a truss rod. So it's not clear
what, if any, problem there is with the truss rod. It sounds "stripped" as
the others have said.
Find out if this guy will accept a return. Ask if the pickups and other
electronics work. Look up the price of a new neck.

You could factor in the cost of a new or repaired neck when you bid, but the
instant relicing looks pretty dorky and the pickguard is also cracked.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'm going to give it a miss - I
think it's likely to go for more than I wish to pay for it given the
risk factor.

Look at the bridge hmm.. is that really a 62 bridge?

The reissues all have that bridge type, so it looks stock. In the end,
the guitar went for over £360. It's crazy given the truss rod problem
and the bad relicing on the body. You can get a brand new Japanese '62
reissue for around £450 if you look around, or a Mexican one that will
be in the same league.
