Saw the Police This Week

Saw the Police This Week

Man, Sychronicity came out in 83, they came thru my town about that
time, or early 84, and I was a broke college student, so I didn't go.

Figured I would catch'em next time around. 24 years later, I got to
see one of my two favorite bands (Steely Dan is the other).

Tickets were $200 for floor or lower bowl. I got lower bowl about
80-90 ft from stage. Never paid that much. Elvis Costello and his
band opened.

Elvis did his thing, which is cool, pretty quirky, but he is all about
the lyrics and his voice. He sounded great.

Police were amazing. They did about 20 tunes and played for 100
minutes. The cool thing for me, was they took liberty with the
arrangements.

I am sure some objected to them not playing exactly as recorded, but
frankly after 25-35 years of hearing them the same way, this was
really refreshing.

They also did some extended soloing/stretching out, which was very
cool. Sting hit all the parts, band was tight.

The stark thing for me was the contrast of the level of musicianship
with so much of the music I hear today.

With a few exceptions, I just don't hear the same level of
musicianship today, which is a bit sad.

Great show, but now that I got to see'em, I don't think I would drop
$200 again.

i'd like to see the police but i'm with you. $200 is too much.

i wouldn't pay $2 to see sting solo.

Heh, I don't think there's anyone I'd pay $200 to go see...$50 is my
limit, and even at that I don't go to big shows anymore. I'd rather
catch a good, unknown band at a bar or small club any day.

But I will rent the Police concert DVD when it comes out ;-) Their
first three albums are amazing.

Ditto. Putting up with the public at that cost is no deal.

I've sat in huge comfy leather seats in sky boxes at pro football games,
with champagne etc. being served on a routine basis like it's some
cocktail party and thought to myself how much more enjoyable the game
would've been in the comfort of my home. Some 's yakking at you
through the game about their own agenda, ignoring the action on the
field, constantly commenting on their wonderful surroundings like some
J. Bodine on a field trip...

To go to a public concert is merely attempting to recall youth. When
in our teens and 20's, reasonable priced tickets, the City, night,
friends, *that* was wonderful. Throw in a little "head candy" -you
travel that path then and the re-tread is just flat, warm beer.

You dont see the same level of musicianship in rock because its a thing of
the past. With all the electronic gadgetry being used these days you dont
hardly even have to be able to play or sing.

Well I don't agree with that. It takes a lot of skill and practice to use
all of those pedals. I just don't have the talent to do one thing. Much less
play with all those pedals at the same time. I wish I could.

Gadgetry is cool. Electric guitars are gadgets. Amps are gadgets.

And there was I thinking you saw Meds Mulay getting carted off by a
couple of coppers backing up men in white coats while screaming 'Let go
of me you Hay8ters' at the top of his voice.

$200 is a lot of money, though. I won't pay more than £50 to see a band
I really like (well, as long as Maiden don't put their prices up).

How right you are. They had two big old TVesque cameras in the back
to run the large screen at the back of the stage. No doubt they were
recording for that very purpose.

A cousin of mine went to their show up in Ottawa, Canada...she said it
was phenomenal.

Ticket prices are fucking out of control nowadays. So, Andy and Stew
aren't as good as they were in 1980? Too bad. I bet Sting look fucked.
Kinda like a hefty bag full o' lard the garbage man forgot to throw

What the heck are you talking about? Andy and Stew are as good if not
better than back in the 80's. Sting looks great also for a guy in his
middle 50's. The yoga he does has kept him in fabulous shape.

They are all incredible musicians, which was part of the point of my
post, I don't see this level of musicianship with newer bands, with
just a couple exceptions.
