Five Ways to Get Yourself Playing Out of a Rut without Spending a DimeHey guys,
I hope all of you are enjoying this summer season upon us.
For me, summer is a time to go outside, crank the amp up to 11 and
just enjoy the good vibrations coming from Marshall half stack. For
those playing guitar, nothing is more frustrating then playing the
same riffs over and over and feeling as though you are not progressing
as a guitarist. To get your creativity truly flowing (without
recreational drugs), take the following words of advice:
1) Google "CAGED system" and find information on the five basic scale
patterns that link the fretboard. Most basic to intermediate
guitarists at least know the major and minor pentatonic patterns. In
the "CAGED" system, the minor pentatonic pattern is known as "G shape
chord pattern" while the minor pentatonic pattern is known as the "E
shaped chord pattern". These patterns are right next to each other on
the guitar and their are 3 other basic patterns waiting to be learned.
Learn all five and then play one pattern ascending, followed by
descending another pattern.
2) Look into Jambase for free guitar backing tracks. Once you are
comfortable moving around the fretboard, improving your skills in
knowing the VALUE of what you are playing WHEN you are playing it in
relation to other instruments is vital in developing your creative
ear.
3) Write down all of the songs you know how to play and know the key
of the song. Learn licks from these songs and work on transposing
licks from your other influences into the song using backing tracks
4) Tape yourself playing guitar with an audio mic, web cam, or video
camera and post videos online to allow your friends to track your
progress. If you don't have one, or even if you do, network with other
guitarists and realize that imitation is the ultimate form of
flattery :) Be sure to develop your own sense of style through
expressing your numerous influences.
5) Trying to figure songs out by ear to develop your sense of relative
pitch. If you have absolute pitch, that's awesome and you are lucky.
For the rest of us, the more practice you put in with your
