You're the leader, right? You make the rules.

New rule: All notifications of that nature (I'm gonna miss practice on
x day) are to be provided by e-mail. Let everyone know, then enforce
it.

Hopefully everyone else in your band shares your level of ambition. In
my last band situation, three of the four were full time professions
looking for a way to have fun, and the fourth didn't have a regular
job and The Band Was Her Life. That dynamic, unfortunately, didn't
become clear until we were a few gigs into it. It didn't last much
longer than that, either.

I had the same problem with another band I was in. She was on the dole
saying that music is her career. She told me once that we weren't even
allowed to go to a funeral if it conflicted with rehearsal. Of course,
she hated her family so it wouldn't matter to her.

In my band, we try to be flexible. We agree a day that everyone can
regularly do and if there's a problem we give sufficient notice. If I
were in the situation where I were in control, like the OP, I wouldn't
take any drastic action after one fuckup, but I would talk to her and
let her know that she needs to make sure that she gives sufficient
notice before cancelling rehearsal. If a pattern emerged with her
behaviour, despite repeated warnings, then I'd take action - presumably
with the agreement on the other members by that stage.

A degree of flexibility built into the band dynamic from the start is
a good thing.

To be entirely fair to our ambitious partner, that year (2001) was an
eventful year all around for all of us, including three parental
deaths, major home renovations and a significant medical emergency.
Tough to come out of that intact, especially for a new band. However,
had we been on the same page band-goal-wise, maybe it would have
worked out.

It really flared when we tried recording. We were tight musically, but
no one was a harmony singer, and that's not the type of thing you
learn while the Big Red Light is on.

what? It was Mother's Day - who would schedule band practice then ?
Give her a break - at least she has her priorities right.

So take a deep breath and get over it.
Now if it was umm.. some other obscure holiday like 'cartoon appreciation day'
and that was the excuse for missing practice - well that's another thing entirely.

well that's my 2 cents. (as if I know anything but felt like writing anyway)

mother's day and thanksgiving day are probably not good
days to schedule band practices.

and hopefully on some other holidays (memorial day weekend, labor day weekend..
etc..) your band is out there working making the $$$ or at least drinks and sandwiches.

heh. hey - good luck with the band!

Make up pieces of paper with the text "I will be at rehearsal on Sunday,
2008-MAY-11 at 1:30 PM CST. You may call me at 11:30 AM to confirm my
presence/absence." ( fill in the blanks with whatever ) and have her
sign one copy, and keep one copy.

Seriously, though - I always make phone contact 24 hours before
rehearsal. Saved me a few trips. People forget things. If I can't make
phone contact, I leave a message stating I won't be there unless
otherwise notified. That means a total of ....5 phone calls went
unanswered - two landline, three cell phone - for more than three tries
each.

see that is exactly what I don't want to do. too much like baby sitting. I'd
like to give up the "bandleader" hat but I'm such a control freak I have to
do it.

Call this one a misunderstanding and move forward with your current
chickie. If it happens again, take comfort in knowing that even
outside of Austin, the whole world is full of very good female singers
who are looking for opportunities to sing.

Seriously, female singers might be the only band members who are even
easier to replace than guitarists.

Just my 2c; Mother's Day don't mean that much to me but I do
understand I need to spend some extra time w/the wife and I even made
the effort to go visit my own mom, but she said no thanks, too
busy&tired...anyway, what kind of a rehearsal time is 1:30 on any
given Sunday? Hell most my band buddies aren't even up by then. We
have our sessions around six the earliest, and most ofthen around
eight when everydody's surely made it back from work etc.

And also: who the hell has time to go to a band practice on weekends
anyway? I can understand the gigs on fridays, but come on, don't you
guys have families you want to spend weekends with? I'd say hasta la
vita to any band set to rehearse on weekend middays. Saturdays I'd be
still drunk around 1:30 and most likely at the cottage anyway, and
Sundays I sure as hell would not want to drag my ass to some noisy
rehearsals.

So it's weeknights only for me, thank you very much, so I can
understand the chick missing out.

Secondly, what does it matter if some person in the band misses a
rehearsal or two? At our rehearsals, maybe in one in ten everybody is
present, usually it's always one or two persons missing. People have
jobs, other hobbies etc. Especially if a singer is missing, what does
that matter anyway? Just give her a tape to practice to and just make
sure she appears at a gig then. Our singer pops in maybe every fourth
or fift rehearsal, hell sometimes we don't see him for a month.
Doesn't matter much, but I can dig it would be nice to have him there
every time...still no big deal.

Cheers,

Dee

I'd say it was time for the sit down chat. Cut her some slack this time
round but let her know that no shows aren't tolerated without decent
enough warning (I request at least 2 days notice) purely because as a
close knit bunch you all rely on each other. If one doesn't show, it
screws everyone else up and wastes their time. They could be off
spending time with families etc.

Sitting people down for chats is hard work as well. I hate it. I just
wish everyone would just do the right thing. Fortunately the boys I
have now are just like that but it was hard work finding them. I've had
to have the talk with others and it aint fun especially when nobody is
earning anything out of it yet.

Her weight seriously shouldn't have anything to do with it. Weight can
be lost but I would be more concerned about your thoughts on her actual
vocal abilities ergo, you think she rocks, then she rocks and if you
truly have the final decision, then exercise it and put the kybosh on
anyone thinking she isn't. Perhaps she might be sensing a bit of that
from the others as well. Make her feel like part of the family. I'm
sure you are aware that swapping band members all the time creates
instability amongst the ones that are there and its always a hard slog
getting to know the new kid on the block. I don't care how good they
are talent wise, it's about working with the group and thats hard work.
