Amp building/design

Hello,

I have no electronics experience but would like to learn to design amp
circuits and build the amps myself. I'm willing to put the time and effort
in, can anyone please suggest a book or books that will get me on my way? I
have Dave Hunter's book.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, Have you seen the AX84 project? It may be just what you're
looking for. * w w w .ax84 . com /

It's best to get the first couple shocks out of the way quickly, so
just lick your fingers and stick em in there. Just kidding! Read the
high-V warning and take it seriously.

Have someone in the room with you when you work on anything...that's
the law in labs with experienced techs as well. Make sure that they
know what to do if you get juiced.

So disclaimer done. Have fun. Read a basic electronics book to figure
out how electrons move. If you want to design, then keep going until
you can understand the Radiotron (search key) or other real tube
books. Read a lot of schematics. Come back and ask questions.

One of the best things to do is start taking classes at the local
community college... AC/DC, Pulse Digital, OpAmps(linear),
that kind of thing. They don't teach tubes, but you'll need
the background to completely understand the rest.

One of the best books for tube understanding is an older
copy of the Sam's Radiotelephone ClassII license manual...
that one taught me a lot. Next would be the ARRL Handbook...
get a copy from the early '60s or late '50s for the better
tube content.

Of course, there are many books available specific to
guitar amps... Darr, Funk, O'Connor, Fliegler, Mitchell.
The Hunter book sounds like it's not very in-depth...
probably not as bad as that silly Marshall book by
whosits (Dorfman?). Tom Mitchell's book is what
I usually recommend to newbies such as yourself.

Most of us here have an entire shelf or two devoted
to this... start buying.

There are plenty of books available, but one of the best things you can do for
yourself is to obtain a copy of the NEETS - Navy Electricity and Electronics
Training Series.

This is a *huge* body of data, comprising 24 training
manuals (modules) starting off with grade-school
basics like iron filings, magnets and batteries, and
ending up with computers and fiber optics. Module
6 (tubes) will be especially helpful if you want to
do guitar amps. Be advised - this is a *lot* of
stuff - the modules are 100-400 pages *each*,
in Adobe PDF format - don't even consider
trying to download this on a dialup. You can get
this at no charge here:

* w w w .phy.davidson.edu/instrumentation/NEETS.htm

I give this away free (on a CD, with a bunch of other
useful stuff) to anyone who orders from me; if you
don't need to buy anything, send me $2 cash
(for media, packing, and postage) and I'll send
you one. (A good option if you don't have a
high-speed connection.)

Don't overlook the thrift stores (salavatin' army, goodwill, etc.) in
your area. They frequently have electronics related books for super
cheap. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find some that are old enough to
focus on vacuum tubes exclusively.

Hi Dan,
Something that helps me tons is a big book of schematics. You dont
actually need to buy a book for that since places like schematicheaven
have almost everything you need. If you DO want a book the Aspen
Pittman Tube Amp Book has a good cross section of different
manufacturers. Some people question the tech articles in his book but
I havent read the latest one so I cant say. I have a couple of the
older editions and keep on on my bench and one by my bed.

(as a side note there is a guy in beaconsfield who has some nice
little books out there. You can get them on eBay. He has a theory book
that was interesting and 3 others that are will walk you through
everything from a champ to a twin reverb (eg. here is how to cut your
chassis, drill this size hole here, here are the list of resistors you
will need etc ). The only warning with those books are A) get some
basic electronics knowledge first B) learn amp SAFE PRACTICES before
you even think of opening an amp 3) the amp building books dont go too
too deep in theory (that is why he has a theory book)

...and sometimes old tube hi-fi amps, reel to reels, phonos, PA's... to modify!

Lot's of others are giving good advice. I'd add that building 8-12
different amps (existing designes), played with them to make them right, and
then played through them, will barely get you to the point of being ready to
design an amp. This is a long road to hoe, so don't give up.

Why not learn rocket science?
Do you know the difference between a resistor and capacitor?
Do you know how to solder?
Do you know what the symbols represent in a schematic?

I'd say learn BASIC ELECTRONICS *first* before even
thinking about designing *anything*, then learn semiconductors
and tubes and inductors and linear ICs and learn how electronic
parts interact with each other, then proceed to designing.
The point is, is to start with basics and advance to the
more complex like building blocks.
Check your local library too for books on electronics.

Hi Dan,

ditto on almost all replys in this thread.

But IMHO with HV-tube amps

*know your limits*
*safety first*

the tube amp book is nice; the online resources ar invaluable.

take everything with a grain of salt.

with tubes, only do it, when you know *what you're doing*

it's a long way to the top...

but no one said you can't do it

Jochen
