preamp tubes

Yeah, i pulled the tubes cause there was something fishy going on with
this amp, i swapped the 1st preamp tube for the 3rd (im calling the 3rd
the preamp closest to the powertubes)... and the amp started doing his
high pitched sqealing worse than it ever did.

Its a marshall jtm30, the preamp tubes are 12AX7A Ruby & power are 6L6GC
rca blackplates.

Reading about these 12AX7A rubys they are a low gain preamp anyway,
which is not what i want, would some Sovtek 12AX7-WB or a Tung-Sol 12AX7
put some gain in this amp and fix my high pitched squealing problem?

Go for the Tung-Sol, assuming you mean the currently-produced Reflektor
variety.

They're top-notch.

Thanks for the help on both posts, and yes I do like the blackplates.
This is the first valve amp i've had, and seemed everything i read
BEFORE buying it seemed ok, then after purchasing it and talking to
other people the bad reviews came out, but this thing has been a rock in
the 2 years i've had it, except for this recent preamp tube issue, which
hopefully is nothing more than replacing these tubes (which really don't
seem to be what i want in it anyway).

Thanks agian.

Picasso...

They're not 'top notch', this guys pimping for Mike Matthews / New
Sensor or who knows who. The NEW Reflektor / Tung Sol bit is B.S. /
Marketing.

If you *REALLY* want high quality, check out N.O.S. Mullards for the
preamp tubes and the best currently manufactured 6L6GC's are made
by Winged C, formerly known as Svetlana.

Marc,
try to put a svet 6L6 into a JTM30... . it will be broken after the first
transport the amp has seen.

Even your holy SVETLANA glass is *breakable*. It's just glass.

No place in this amp for anything taller than a RCA or GE 6L6GC, a
tungsol 5881, a 6P3-CE (button base) or a TAD 6L6-GC (GE Type).

Actually, the OP was asking about preamp tubes.

I'd add the Reflektor/Tung-Sol 6L6GC-STR to your list
of shortbottles; it's just barely taller than the 5881, and
it's a *real 6L6GC, a blackplate, too. I have a customer
in Denver who builds Dumble clones, and the TS 6L6GC-STR
is the *only* currently-produced 6L6 he's been able to find
that survives at the 540VDC+ he runs them at. Field failure
rate has been vanishingly small - admittedly, from a
small sample, as I have less than 1000 sold so far - but the
best thing about them is that they sound absolutely *killer*.
In fact - if I may be so bold - they take a dump on a whole
lot of the "respected" NOS 6L6s.

Of course, I'm "pimping for Mike Matthews," so don't take
my word for it. Ears don't lie; yours won't. ;-) They may
be hard to find, as they've been in short supply lately.

Hi LV
I didn't reply to the OP....I just can't stand marcs' "svet svet svet"
appraisal. They are surely fine tubes, except their 12AX7 turd, but
there are others - and competition is good for the improvement of
todays' variety of glass.

regards

Jochen

I may get yelled at by some of the more technically savvy on the NG, but
in the 12 years I have had my Boogie Mark III, I replaced the power
tubes with all sorts of different tubes, never messed with the bias, and
never had a problem. I used Boogie tubes, Groove tubes (of different
ratings), Sovtek, whatever was available at the time. Some sounded
better than others, none sounded bad.

You have been lucky, in my opinion. In the past, I think tubes used to
be a little more consistent. But nowadays, for exampe, I use Svetlana
power tubes a lot and they vary tremendously. While some take -52V @475
V plate voltage to bias at about 30mA (which is what Fender and Boogie
would specify for their 6L6s), others have needed as low as -58V to bias
at the same place. That is a huge range, I had a pair that was idling at
68mA each at -52V, at those current levels, the tube won't last at all
unless you throttle back some.

marc,

your point is?

variations?
STR?
ever mesured the different requirements of old RCAs, GEs, Telefunkens,

Ha, ha, I'll let william or some other low life answer that with some bile.

Re: preamp tubes

I have a JTM30 -- and I will share an email I got from the last tube
dealer who sold me tubes. This is mostly about the output stage, but
still good information...

The Sovtek- along with virtually all of the newer current production
tubes- are all "non-original". They are all based on 40+ year old
designs,
manufactured with modern materials, modern production techniques, and
have

...That would be the Sovtek 5881/5881WXT. The only difference between
the two Sovtek models is the base- the 5881 has a wafer base, which is
a
thin piece of plastic, while the WXT version has a full base. The guts
of
the tubes are identical. The full base tubes fit in all the same gear
as the
wafer base- the problem with the wafer based version, is that it
didn't fit
well in the Fender amps that had the beartrap tube retainers, so
Sovtek
introduced a second version of the tube with a full base, so that the
retainers had something to grip onto. We had poor experiences with the
wafer
based tubes in the past, losing vacuum if not handled with great care,
which
we assumed was due to the weakness at the base, so we only offer the
full
base version, as it fits in everything anyway. Slightly more expensive
than
the wafer version, but if the tubes don't lose vacuum, it's worth it.
Fender
uses the 5881WXT in virtually all of their production amplifiers- if
you buy
a new Fender, it will come with a set of these, due to their
ruggedness and
reliability. They generally long outlive the new amplifier warranty
period,
and sound great...

Our recommendation to you is to use the TungSol 6L6GC STR instead of
TS5881 in your Marshall. They are a top-shelf upgrade over the
5881WXT, and
will allow your JTM to be all it can be...

Great post and informative! This, vs. $$$/snake oil opinion is what
persuades and convinces. Thank you. mvm :-)

Re: preamp tubes

And by the way - if the 6L6s are longer than the 5881s, it is really
easy to take the amp's protective metal shield and flip it around so
the longer edge is on the other side. get some 1/2 inch rubber feet
and longer screws to hold it in place.

However, the new TungSol 6L6 STRs have a short bottle. Not quite as
short as a REAL TungSol 5881, but shorter than NOS 6L6s and certainly
shorter than any Sovtek, JJ or Sino currently made. They'll fit fine in
your JTM30 with the cage installed. Big tone improvement over the
Sovtek 5881.

One more thing: If you order them (or any tube for that matter) from a
vendor who pre-matches them, you should specify a cool-running pair.
The wimpy JTM30 power transformer doesn't like big currents and
"adjusting" the bias on a JTM30 is a 1-1/2 to 2 hour job (no kidding!).
