Law of conservation of energy....voltage double, amps half.
Look at the numbers. With the doubler, I can build a SE EL34 (not
enough mA for much more, but it gives me 600v), or just use a FW
bridge (no 2x-er) and I'll get B+ north of 300. This turned out to be
a nice hunk of iron, for little money.
Oddly enough, or maybe not, that chart Phil Alison posted many years
ago says mA based on the ohms on the primary should be around
225-300. It turns out that's about right.
AFA ripple, that's what chokes and caps are for.
