Score! Envy me some *more*!

Score! Envy me some *more*!

Copped this off CL, $200 and a drive to Bubbaland (South Austin)
to pick it up. Check out those overheated JJ's... hopefully there's
still some good iron in there. The frickin' fuse has no writing on it...
I'll take a picture of it, too, that damn Flickr is acting up as usual.

Did I score, or did I score? More pix later...

Haven't played them enough to know... the BF Bassman
project sits, for want of attention. I'll probably use the V4
with them, that should be a good smoke test! They sounded
great when I had the Bassman running... all except for the
'hair' (parasitics) from the BFB. I'll let y'all know how it
goes.

Yeah, how about that crappy reverb tank? You'd
think it was supposed to hold a footswitch, or
something... but I tried it, and it does make the
boingy sound, somewhat...

I've tested the tubes now, one of the JJ7027's is
fairly fried, down to 75%, and there's a very
tired RCA 12AU7 and a long-in-the-tooth
6CG7, all down around 50%... so far, no
show-stoppers, except for the fact that I
didn't find a 12DW7, there was an ECC803S
in the slot that tests up to 42% on one triode
(22% is good for 12AX7 on the B&K707).
I'll probably find a circuit mod for the other
tube... DW7's are back in production, so
I'll be modding it back... *if* I don't find
burnt hell inside.

Gee, I wonder who I could trust to match
me up a replacement for my gone-south
7027... the mind boggles. Will I go for
quality, or politics?

That's about what I paid for my '73 VT22 w/o speakers. Actually, it
was a barter deal, so I only paid time (labor). Mine's bone stock,
with only a few preamp tubes changed. All but 2 are Telefunkens now
(got a decent UOS 'DW7 from Angela) and the old OP tubes are still
kickin'. AES has can caps for it, but you'll have to insulate one of
them (yeouch! 609VDC to gnd in standby). You can reuse one of the
cardboard covers.

Enjoy the Toy,

Not cheaply, but you can even replace the front panel:

* w w w .fliptops . net /catalog/index.php?cPath=34&osCsid=78bd7483eed00c50cdb32424d05bad19

Enjoy!

Hey, Tash... thanks for the link, I'm at the right place
I can tell. Turns out that, with six of those aluminum
knobs (like the Dan Armstrong guitars had) I can
make half of my purchase back by selling the spinners!

I've been thinking about a new faceplate; they're out of stock ('til
June, IIRC). Mine's not blank, but... I wonder if the black comes off
as easy as the old ones.

Hmmm. You got knobs, and I've got some 7027As (NOS RCA). But I don't
want to give these up yet, and I only need one knob. I hate to pay
what they're asking, but maybe someday... What, $26??? That's crazy,
but if I ever sold it, it *might* get $26 more (might not).

BTW, I've used this for bass, and it does a good job (try it with
6550s). I mainly use it for clean guitar, which it does nicely. Takes
pedals well, too. One loud mutha, I'll tell ya. Shortly after I got
it, I cranked it up to around 1-2 o'clock after band practice, did
some lead licks and hit a couple power chords. A lamp in one of the
fluorescent lights fell out, some stuff that used to be on the walls
was on the floor and the singer looked at me and said "Holy F***!!
THAT'S Loud!!"
I normally run it at about 8-9 o'clock, just above "barely cracked".

I'm still trying to figger out which one I need... I did date
mine last night, found a '71 date code on the hum balance
pot (the only one you can see besides the replaced bias one).

> Hmmm. You got knobs, and I've got some 7027As (NOS RCA).

Check out the new pix... I found my pair of GE 7027... not sure
I want to try and match them (expensive!). I'm going to get another
JJ 7027 and let it cook off the mismatch in-service, yeah, that's the
ticket.

Do like the young punks do, hit the music stores and swipe
parts off of Dan Armstrong guitars. Like I said, the knobs
paid for half the purchase price. I made out fat, if both
transformers are good. I'd love to have a lathe... start spinning
those knobs out in bunches, that could pay for a retirement!

It's been decades since I've blown a speaker... I'm probably due.

I'd been inside a VT22 before, so I figgered I'd find
smoked circuit board... gawd, I hate the tube-on-board
method. I can just try to throw it back together and
turn it, or I can get in deep and try to fall in love with
it... plenty of things I don't like about it, that shrimpy
hook-up wire they used doesn't look robust.

But man, it does have some iron in it... can't wait to
hear how it sounds.

I guess they pulled the front panel off ?
Was it listed as a vt22 ?

7027 are a pricey tube aren't they .. as compared to 6L6. ?

Nope... poor guy had it up for $300, then came down.
He was playing bass through it. Lent it to a band, their
fourth gig it upchucked.

> 7027 are a pricey tube aren't they .. as compared to 6L6. ?

According to Uncle Ned, they're the same, with perhaps
cooling fins for the gridposts. Look at the new pics, I
found a NOS pair of GE 7027 in my stash... now, I can
either try to match these guys up with another pair, or
I can buy another JJ to put in, or I can put together a
mongrel quad of used STR, 7851, whatever. It's going
to get a thorough cleaning and shotgunning of the
bias components first.
