6k6GT in a Champ?

Thinking of trying it.
Picked up 3 NOS TungSols for 33 cents a pop (if they are crap I am out
a buck.. so not too too worried)
Max Plate for a 6v6 is 350.. these are 315.
My Champ 600 runs about 370.
Thoughts?

What the heck indeed.
They'll probably provide as much output as a contemporary
Rooskie 6V6 even though American made 6V6s are spec'd
at 5.5 Watt output and Am. 6K6s are spec'd at 4.5 Watts,
Rooskie or Chech 6V6s probably only put out 4.5-5.0 Watts if that much.
But the *big* benefit is having NOS tubes which will last
10 times longer.

Have fun,
Rock for Peace!

Ed

I did it years and years ago for a few minutes. Didn't really notice a
difference in sound. They may hang as long as they haven't been
bounced around alot over the last 50 years. I'd check the plate
dissapation tho, a different value cathode resistor may need to be put
in to keep the plate within limits. May as well see whats goin' on
with the screen as long as yer in there.

Screen is right. At least up the screen limiting resistor to 1K (R26).
Besides sounding cool, old champs typically pound the crap out of the
output tube. May work, may not -> Assumption: Champion 600? As in the
new production model?
Plate watts at idle are at around 15W (6v6) - nearly double the 6k6
capacity. Who knows? I know why they did it, but can't say I agree on
the K-bypass cap voltage rating (450).

Chinese Champ 600 with an 8in RSC Alnico speaker and bypassed the tone
stack so it sounds like a champ but at the same time doesnt.
Poped the tube in and tried it for a few minutes. Compared it to a
Fender branded 6V6 from ( I think) the late 70s (tiny thin base..the
beartrap for the tube socket barely holds the tube in place).
The dont see a big diff in volume but the tone is a little on the
reserved and dull side so I will check the bias in the a.m. (cant play
too much now..newborn in the house and EVERYONE needs to sleep ; )

zOut is different for the 6K6 and that will probably affect tone. Good or
bad, I don't know. It will be the sound of a mismatch and may carry some
consequences. At that wattage, I imagine it won't create a problem, but do
let us know if it does.
