Ed, I draw a print to see on paper what the heck the ckt is, burnt resistors and all.
I then, figure out how the ckt works on paper.
Then, I grab the calculator, apply the theory, and crunch the numbers.
That's how I get the starting part values, when you need to know values.
I plug the unit in, and tweak for ckt function.
Having a variable metered 500 volt DC power supply on the bench saves time getting data from a unit
with a toasted power supply section with a ton of fried resistors. Substitute with the bench
supply, fire up stages one at a time while crunching ohm law.
Run the tube specs from the manuals. They tell you what voltages will keep a tube happy.
Ed, I can't even guess at the numbers of tube amps I've repaired without a print.
SS amps without a print, the parts population works against ya.
However, psychic connection helps in both cases.
