switching pre and master functions..

My main amp (Peavey Triple XXX Super 40) sounds great using it like the
manual says but when I switch the functions of the pre and master knobs, it
wakes up and just destroys any tones I can get using it the "suggested way".
My problem is that when I crank the master and then work the pre up, it goes
from way too quiet to way too loud with no way to incrementally adjust even
with a feather touch.

Is there anything I can do (or have a tech do) to make the pre gain more
gradual so I can get that goosebump making tone without going deaf?

TIA

I think I used the term "master volume" wrong btw. I think it is just a
volume knob.

Does it have an F/X loop? Stick a stompbox compressor in there for a
"final" master volume. Turn the "compression" knob down, just use
the output level.

Have a tech check the taper of the pot. If it ramps quickly from quiet
to loud (presumably in the first few degrees of rotation), maybe it's
a linear taper. Manufacturers sometimes do that to lend an artificial
impression of power. There are also different types of audio taper
pots, so even those could ramp up too fast.

Depending on the circuit, you may have to unsolder the pot to check
this. Linear taper will have 50% resistance at 1/2 rotation. Many
audio taper pots have about 30% at 1/2 rot. Presuming that this is the
problem, you could check Digikey and Mouser for pots with a more
gradual ramp. Try to find one with a log taper that has 10% resistance
at 1/2 rotation.
