Stating the obvious:

It's like asking what is the absolute best flavor at Baskin and Robbins. It's
entirely a matter of personal choice. ...but that won't keep me from
commenting, if you're looking for advice on what to try out.

Bang for the buck: Try Digitech DF-7 Distortion Factory. Ignore online
samples, they use a mediocre amp simulator output direct to recording. You'll
be using the other output for feeding an amp. DF-7 gives seven models from DOD
250 and TS9 all the way through MT-2 Metal Zone and Fuzz. Hard to beat the
price and versatility (you get a sweeping mids boost/cut and bass added to most
vintage models).

Overall versatility: Line 6 DM4, the yellow cousin to the green DL4 delay unit.
The stock settings are mediocre and the stock output is set HOT, but
everything is easily edited by KNOBS (instead of archaic up and down buttons).
As with anything that is versatile, it's up to the user to dial in the right
tones. But they ARE in there.

High gain: Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion. I like to keep distortion off or barely
on, and rely on the gain setting.

High gain metal: I currently have found a use for Line 6 Uber Metal and
Rocktron Zombie. The Zombie lacks a gain control, but works fine with guitar
volume pot. It gives a variable symmetric to asymmetric pot, and a "rectified
distortion" pot.

Willing to live with rack mount: Hughes and Kettner Tubeman Plus rackmount goes
from a very, very nice clean, through scooped metal. One 12AX7 at real tube
voltages.

High budget: Matchless Hot Box or Dirt Box. Higher gain yet? Soldano GTO.

I recently purchased a Biyang Ds-7 distortion box and I really like it -
three different distortion sounds with the flick of a switch, and a nice
SS enclosure, and the price was right, too

Re: THE Best Distortion in a Stomp Box

It is exactly like asking what your favorite ice cream is Jim. For
me, I have 3 different pedals for the different applications I use.

I favor a Dumble (Robben Ford/Larry Carlton) distortion, tight,
focused, lower gain, upper mids, for my default OD. However, I will
stack my Gaspedal Carb, which has a looser Marshalleque sound.

I also have a Keely Fuzzhead, which uses both geranium and silicon
transistors for a creamy, mellower fuzz (ger) to a brighter, more
agressive fuzz (sil). Some are stackable also.

Finally, I have a NOC3 Firefly, which is a pretty versatile pedal with
3 way mid toggle. Pretty cool little unit. I use the NOC3 Earthtone
clean boost pedal, not for gain, but for a buffer and coloring agent.
Makes my tone fuller somehow, like the Xotic, but better imo.

This, after years of Rat, MXR, Boss, Digitech, TS, etc. I got tired
of going for the same sounds that I hear so often.
