I recommended The Tube Store on good faith. I have bought tubes for
them & they sell good tubes. End of discussion.

Well, if you bought for them, it's only natural that you'd recommend
them. ;o)

I have bought power tubes from them & they drifted too much. End of
discussion.

Some outfits burn their stock in, and some don't.

Some say they do, and don't.

End of discussion, indeed. ;-)

That's faulty logic if I've ever heard any.

Well did you break them in? These companies all sell tubes from the
same manufacturer's and I doubt if they break them in. If a tube
drifts, surely it's not the fault of the retailer unless they didn't
match the tubes correctly in the first place.

Why, yes! And after I did they were magically no longer matched,
because a good matching process involves "breaking them in" <before>
they are matched. This is known as the "burn in" process.

I have seen something about burn racks on the JJ site...

I beg to differ. If they're matching tubes without a good burn-in,
it's their fault.

I understand what you are saying. Can you name one company (other
than LV) that advertises that they do a burn-in process before
matching? You seem to be assuming that this is standard procedure -
is it?

I couldn't find a thing on The Tube Store's web site saying that they
do this. Did you ask them before you bought the tubes? Did you
contact them after they drifted apart?

I've replaced the tubes on my '62 Vibrolux several times & never had
it re-biased. I've never had the problems you describe with the
sound. Maybe I got lucky?

No - that would be LV. Listen all these retailers sell the same tubes
from well known companies. You pick the tube that you like you buy it
from whomever gives you good service. The prices of most of these
tubes are roughly the same anyways, so the only thing that matters is
shipping/handling costs. It's a simple as that.

You seem to have missed LV's post the other day about haveing a big
number of tubes running on the burnin machine...isn't that about the
same as breaking them in? Do you even know what a load line is?

No - I understand that he does that but so what? You can do that
yourself with new tubes.

If you want to order tubes from LV then go ahead - it's a free
country. I personally would never order tubes or anything from him &
that's my right also. No argument here.

Sure you can.

And when you're done, they'll be drifted apart, because
they weren't burned in *prior* to matching. That's the
*point* - matching *after* a 24-48 (72, for some types)
hour aging period insures that drift will be minimized.

And, like I said - there are outfits which burn tubes in,
outfits which do not, and outfits which say they do but
don't. 'Nuff said.

Stick to Earth Shoes, son - it's your destiny/density.

OK - I'll buy that. But all tubes will eventually drift apart.

Question - in a double blind study, could anyone (besides maybe an amp
tech), actually hear the drift in terms of the sound of their amp. I
seriously doubt it. And if you can, could you please quanitfy it.

Heck - most people will replace their tubes w/o even re-biasing, so
whether or not they're matched is probably irrelevant.

Serioulsy - if you can quantify how bad the drift gets & whether or
not it makes a real difference in sound, then I'll start buying my
tubes from you.

I don't know of any of the major online stores that I've dealt with
that do that. Seems like a money loser to me.

So what? It just might sound better to the owner. Sheeks!
There's nothing wrong with a bit of signal asymmetry. In fact,
some may prefer the result.

What IS important is tone and reliability and using tubes that
are NOT handled by some senile dildo or some fascist bastard
asshole who hates peace, love and understanding and imbues tubes
with a creepy negative vibe and shitty by-products of greed,
flatulence and evil spirits like the goosing ghost of Runny Realbum.
