My understanding is that beneath the hype and marketing, Germanium and
Silicon transistors respond differently, and possibly some of the
properties that made Germanium obselete are actually strengths when used
as a tone booster.

I gather that Germanium transistors are pretty hit and miss and most(?) do
not respond correctly for use in a tone booster and so must be discarded.
This and the fact that they tend to be wired by hand and properly checked
is probably why people like Boss don't make them.

As for what sounds better, ear of the beholder and all that. :)

Sorry, totally wrong. They behave in exactly the same way. The basic
semiconductor equations don't change with material.

However a belief like yours is what keeps the purveyors of germanium in
business. Along with a bizarre belief that 'old is best'.

If you had read my post you would (presumably) have noticed I didn't
profess to know exactly what "the truth" on the subject is.

I can't level that accusation at you, and it seems like you've got a bit
of an issue on the subject of older kit. That's your problem, not mine.

Whoa! Apples/oranges!

The *equations* don't change, but the parameters that enter into the
equations (like electron and hole mobilities, diode ideality factors,
mobility dependence on electric field, reverse bias leakage current...)
sure do!

Right. It's like saying all tubes sound the same because they all
have a vacuum in them. ;-)

On Germ. transistors, Davis' and Lord Valve's replies are both worth a
fuck hole. One's based on excess and the other is punchy. Bullshitters
101. Not to say that there isn't a pack of nonsense (the "holy grail
x'istor types) associated with the generic topic, but there *is* a
sonic difference. Try a FF or a RM clone, etc., using silicon and,
bzzzzzzzzt, they suck. If you disagree, then you are also clueless.

I wasn't arguing with anybody.

I was just takin' a minor shot at Howie, who had (probably still has)
a picture of himself gripping a guitar in a rather awkward fashion
in front of a collection of early 70s blacklight posters; he looked
like he'd just smoked the entire evidence room at the local
precinct station.

Pssst, hey chubby. You hype up vacuum tubes and sell them from a
dirty, cluttered, small and miserable dwelling. You didn't come up
with the cure for cancer, etc. You just *think* you've conquered so
much.

So.... what are YOU offering for tubes and matching?
Are your prices better than LV's? Is your service?
BTW-who the fuck are you? At least LV doesnt hide behind
a bullshit handle, everyone knows who he is and where to find him,
and at least he's got the balls to post a REAL phone number and
a REAL e-mail and a REAL address to his shop.

You on the other hand, you are a spineless cunt.
