Unicode Chord Charts in HTML

With any luck at all, very few of you would have a use
for these except possibly to give to students, but if
you would catch any whopping errors in them I'd be much
obliged. If you find them useful yourself, that's OK
too. ;-)

I found the "notes on the guitar" very useful for students.

The chords on this page

http :// www .openguitar,com /ch102.html

seem mostly unreadable to me.

I don't think ASCII characters are adequate to the task. Those diagrams
need to be clear and easily readable.

Well, for starters, characters don't line up (two diff browsers -
Safari 3.1 and Firefox 2).

You need utf-8 encoding. I think you can set it in your browser.
I have iceweasel, which is firefox, and the chords look good,
although the overall effect is not great. I need better CSS,
but again my stylesheet isn't really bad, it's just having a
lot asked of it. :-) daveA

I use Firefox, using utf-8. Your diagrams are garbled:

Now that's peculiar. Set your fixed font to "monospace".
The color is baffling. I'm getting better and better
pdf's all the time, getting there. daveA

I have no font names "monospace" on this computer. My monospace font is
Courier New. I tried a couple of others but your diagrams are still
garbled.

I tried that, but its still garbled.

That's as much testing of your page as I'm willing to do. You'll have
to fix it on your own.

I don't think your viewers are going to bother to change their browser
settings just to see your page.

Hi David,

I just wanted to say that as a beginner, I found your site very
helpful. Your "10 Lessons" are greatly improving my technique and
sound, you've made my scales regimen a lot more systematic, and the
Carcassi links are a goldmine. My browser (FF, set on UTF-8) had
exactly the same problem as Lumpy's and Nil's, so I just ignored the
chord charts. Even without them, the site is a rich resource.

I guess my point is that the charts aren't a big deal. They're
available in many different places. If you want to provide them,
they'd add some value but they're not a unique feature like some of
your other stuff. And, like Nil says, it's easier to navigate to
another site than to diddle with my settings until they look right.

Could you use the tablature feature of Lilypond to generate charts?
That might fix the display problem, and having a tutorial on how to
use Lilypond to write tabs *would* be a unique and helpful feature.

It worked with gnome-browser, konqueror, iceweasel, and epiphany, but
not dillo. Dillo has a config file, so I probably won't get around
to it. You don't have a setting for fixed space fonts or something
like that.
Go to preferences and set your fixed font to "monospace", and I think
you'll be in tall cotton. daveA

Sure, but all of the new browsers claim to be able to handle
unicode and fixed spacing. I did not draw the diags, I made them like
this

ooxx
======
||/234
++++++
\____/

and converted the = | + to unicode box characters with
3 lines of sed in a script. It's really fast work. There are
all kinds of configuration issues that you could have,
and they could get in the way of other stuff too, some
of which you might be interested in.

I'm still trying to hack it into pdf. Getting close.

monospace is a generic font-family. If I knew more about
html I could give better configuration advice. daveA
