Hand rest

Hand rest

I took a piece of bass wood which is four-inches by two-inches by one-
eighth-inch. This is the piece of wood upon which my hand rests. In
between the sound board and the bass wood are two more pieces of wood,
each of which is two-inches by one-inch by three-quarters-of-an-inch.
Using some half-inch double-sided tape, I made a bridge-like structure
which stands one-inch off of the sound board, which is probably about
a quarter-of-an-inch higher than it needs to be. This hand support
stands immediately next to the sound hole, and spans over the strings,
on the bridge side.

Well that's stealing. You should
be ashamed of yourself. Turn yourself
into the lumber police.

Muso,
Are you having shoulder problems, holding your hand and arm out and over the
body? So it crosses the stings at an angle between the bridge and the sound
hole? Could you post a picture?

I'm not having any shoulder problems, but I was having a problem with
the little finger of my picking hand, which I was using to steady my
hand. It would get sore, and then I would have to stop playing for
awhile. That problem has now disappeared.

I have a web cam now, but it requires more light than I have
available.

Eventually, I might build a hand rest which will not touch the sound
boatrd at all, but which will span the width of my guitar. That one
will require more work, though. I don't notice any difference in the
sound with the rest which, though I'm sure that the difference must be
there.

Muso,
I ride a motorcycle and my fingers get a lot of exercise braking and clutch
and the throttle. FWIW I alternate finger up then down, down for pickin up
for strumming. I used to soak it in ice cold water, my physical therapist
showed me that trick, it tricks the muscles into relaxing quickly.
