buying my first acoustic guitar-advice wanted

Hi there,
I would like to ask you for an advice on buing my first acoustic guitar.
I am thinking of buying muy first guitar (never played an instrument beore)
and don't know how/where to start.
My budget is about £130. Since I haven't played before, I don't want to buy
an expensive guitar to start with. (in case I learn that I am musicaly deaf
and give up)
I've looked at the ones in Argos (listings below) and think that the 3/4
size might be ideal for an adult beginner.
Has anyone got one of these guitars or knows about somthing simmilar (I am
based in London).
Any advice/tips are much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Tomas

I would get a full size guitar, the 3/4 size is made for little hands. I
think most begginners end up with an inexpensive dread.

Re: buying my first acoustic guitar-advice wanted

All three manufacturers that you are considering make quality products.
Of the choices that you present, I'd go with the Yamaha. I have a
Yamaha beginners guitar and am very pleased with it. The Yamaha is made
of Mahogany with a Spruce (presumably laminated) top. The materials of
construction in the Yamaha are the best of the three. I wouldn't buy a
small size guitar because they (generally)don't have as good a bass
response as full size ones. If possible go to the store and have one of
the salesmen play the model(s) you are considering. Also try holding
each that you might consider to see how they fit you. I'll bet a 3/4
will be too small unless your under about 5' 8" tall.

I believe the guitars you are looking at are full size "Dreadnoughts".If
a full sized "dreadnought" is too large, you might want to consider what
we call a "parlor" guitar on our side of the pond. These are larger than
a "3/4" but smaller that what is referred to as a "dreadnought" or
"American folk" guitar.

Remember that you will need the guitar, a metronome, a electronic tuning
device, a case and some instructional materials. If you get the Yamaha
you will only need to get some sort of case, and metronome. You can get
the case later, but I'd recommend you get the metronome now and start
using it immediately.

TAP YOUR FOOT. Timing is everything. People can dance to someone beating
two sticks together in rhythm, however, the best series of notes played
in a non rhythmic fashion will be a failure.

I helped someone buy a Yamaha 2nd from MF for $109.
Excellent guitar, as is every Yami that I've ever seen.

Roger that. You can tap your foot or your ear
or your pancreas or whatever body part is
convenient. But if you don't "feel the dance"
BEFORE you start making a single sound, it will
NOT magically correct itself and develop
rhythm as the song gets "older". Starting any
song without a VERY CLEAR picture of what the
rhythm should be is like trying to make coffee
without water.

I agree that a Yamaha is probably your safest bet and once again don't get a
3/4 size guitar, get a full size one. If you have a music shop near you, go
there instead of Argos. Going to Argos for a guitar is like going to PC
World to buy a new car. If something goes wrong with your guitar a music
shop will help to sort it, an Argos minimum wage bod won't. Make sure you
you let them know your price and stick to it. Most music shops will be much
more helpful.

The added bonus also with a guitar shop is you can hear your guitar being
played first too.

Finally remember that tuner and maybe a beginner songbook and a pick.
Although if youre a freecycler you could probably get a starter book there
for free.

Whereabouts are you? Maybe someone can recommend a shop?

I hope this helps

I have never met a Yamaha that was not at least good, usually better
than good after a proper set up. They are made well and sound
good...even the cheaper ones. So I guess you could say Yamaha would be
my choice, though I would also say that you should consider a full
size guitar. I don't know model numbers or prices, but I would
recommend the cheapest Yamaha that has a solid spruce top. Probably
around $300 American. Good luck.
