Measure first to see if it needs or can
stand lowering. First fret action while
the 3rd fret is capo'd, .005 inch.

If you want to lower the nut, do it
individually, for each string, from
the TOP.

To remove the nut, saw a .010 kerf behind
the nut, then tap gently with a block of wood
toward the tuners and down (toward
the treble strings, toward the floor).

Now that you've got it out, you have to clean
the nut and it's seat. Doing that will change
the fit and the action.

Glue it back in with two drops of white glue.
Not super glue, not yellow glue. Plain, light
strength white glue. It's not under any stress
to make it want to come out. And you want to
be able to remove it later (weeks, months, years).

Now you have to adjust the tops of the slots anyway.
So it would have saved all that time if you'd have
left the nut in place and worked from the top..:-)

See www ,fr ets,com for more than you ever wanted to
know about how to do all of that.

Hello, Lucas,

You might have read a post of mine where I mentioned about stocking up
on spare nuts before lowering the action of my guitar. The lowering
itself will be done by filing the notches deeper, and the extra nuts
will be used only if I make the mistake of filing them too deep. Stew
Mac has a free online tutorial on nut removal. You will need to use a
source of heat, such as a soldering iron.

put a piece of hard straight steel all along its side and loosen it
with a sharp blow. Don't try to pry it out. daveA

wood wood wood. Good heavens use a piece
of wood, not metal.

Yes and no...the set up of any instrument will shift during it's
transit from Indonesia to Arizona. Environmental and mechanical
factors typically mean that, well, factory setups are virtually
meaningless by the time they reach you and usually have to be tweaked
(which typically only happens with higher price point
instruments...for obvious economic reasons). Having said that, you are
correct that the nut action should not need aggressive tweaking unless
you have a clear preference that is not addressed by a stock factory
setup.
