Digital recorders.

Digital recorders.

My band is in the process of making our own demo.
In the past I have used 1/2 and 1/4 inch reel to reels, 4 and 8 track
portastudios and other analog recorders.
It has been several years since I have done any serious recording.
I have been looking at digital recorders but I am pretty much clueless
about them.
I need to be able to record at least 8 tracks simultaneously.
From what little I have read 8 track digital recorders can only record
on 4 tracks at a time and 16 track recorders record on 8 tracks.
These things look like you need a 4 year college course to know how to
operate them.
What ever happened to simple?

Pt,

I think they've discontinued the Fostex VF160EX so it might be on e-bay
cheap. It will record 16 tracks simultaneously but you'll need to buy a
ligthpipe for more than 8 tracks.

Thanks.
There are two on ebay now that I'm watching.
Have you used one?

Well what happened to simple was - 2 mics placed properly and record
live to 2 tracks.... isn't good enough.

But honestly I have an 8 track with only 2 live. It has treated me
well as a learning tool, and to create multi instrument music to
present to the band as songs we should do (on thge original side of
the deal , with lots of single takes per instrument). But yeah it
sucks trying to get every-thing "Right in 1 shot" live to a recorder
with the band. - But you can do it, mic the crap out of everything -
you may need a little mixer alone for the drums. So just send everyone
in stereo to those 2 tracks And don't screw up when "the tapes
rolling".....Good Luck ( adjust settings after listening a few time,
and then don't mess with the knobs...) Ed S.

We put in many hours recording one song on my 4 track.
We have a total of 9 inputs so we have to use a mixer.
Now we are only recording on 2 tracks.
Vocal on one track, music on the other...reminds me of Sgt Pepper.
The biggest problem has been levels.
I would like each input on a separate track so I can go back and fix
the problems.

Yep, but you won't have to do MS updates, use a virus/spyware scanner on
it, and you won't need to sit down with a mouse.

Re: Digital recorders.

Pt,

sounds like it is too late now if you have purchased something
already, but for demo's I have heard killer clips from these small
field recorders.

Brands like Zoom H2, or H4, Eideral R9 all have built in condensers,
or you can plug in your own mics. They are simple to use and store as
mp3.

Cheap, easy, and sound quality is astounding. My experience is you
want a nice dynamic, live performance if you can for a demo anyway for
energy.

8 + tracks for a demo is overkill for a bar band imo. However, if you
decide to put out a disc for sale in the future, you have a unit that
will do a decent job. Good luck
