VG Strat

A friend told me about a demonstration he attended at the local guitar shop
and he was amazed by the sounds you could achieve.

http :// www .fender,com /vgstrat/home.html

I am in the market for a quality guitar, is it worth looking into or is it a
gimmick?

Wondering what you guys think of it?

That page takes a long time to show up with my dialup connection, but
I'm guessing that it's a MIDI guitar, and, if so, then, yes, it's a
gimmick. I'm off to work.

What do YOU think of it?

Does it improve your playing?

Re: VG Strat

I have played one, and it isn't for me. It is kinda like a very
limited Line 6 Variax.

It only does Fender sounds, which are okay. The tuning change this is
kinda interesting, but I am not into alternate tunings.

With the extra electronics it is heavier also. Not a bad product for
guys who need that kind of stuff on hand.

If I am going to play my strat, I do so because I want my strat
sounds, not other stuff.

What about for people who wants to have one guitar for the rest of their
lives?

That's hard for me to imagine. I have about a dozen & am eye ballin'
2 more. Not saying it can't happen because the best player I know has
just 2 -- vintage J-45 & vintage mia strat. I'd like to arrive there
one day.

Well, I have owned a strat ever since I started playing guitar, and
probably always will. I really like the sound, and playability of a
strat.

I don't need or use all that other stuff, so the VG is not for me.
However, it seems to be built well, and work as advertised.

I guess if it sells well enough, they will keep making it. Have you
checked the reviews at Harmony Central?

One of the DSP/Midi settings on this
strat is "classic strat". So now we
don't have to save up to buy a classic
strat. We can get a cheaper strat that
has midi/DSP and simulates a strat.

Maybe I can get a Les Paul that will
imitate the sound of a Les Paul.

I have been practicing more less paul lately.

I dig more less paul sounds.

Luthier friend of mine built a LP shape
body with no mag pickups. It had only
a piezo bridge transducer. He called it
a "Much Less Paul".

Re: VG Strat

I can get decent sounds out of my Line 6 rig for imitating various
amps, but it is just that a reasonable imitation.

The Variax guitars are pretty good at that too. For live,
reasonable. I only like the higher end model, as the others feel a
bit cheap to me.

It is pretty each though to get a decent strat and Epi LP to cover
both bases.

Re: VG Strat

I've owned one for about 8 months now. I like it a lot. I understand that
it's not for everyone, especially the purist but being able to switch
between Strat, Tele, Humbuckers and acoustic all in one axe works for me. I
like the 12 string setting as well. I haven't used the alternate tunings
much but may once we start some of the Stones Open G material.

The one downside for me at this point is the batteries. It takes 4 AA
batteries that are "on" as soon as you plug in. You need to keep spares
around. When the batteries fail while you're on stage, you are limited to a
Standard American Strat.

Hope that helps some.

Wow, thanks for that Dave. I wouldn't have thought of that. Bummer
if you are playing your 12 string setting on a Byrd's tune and it goes
out. :-)
