Larrivee or Breedlove?

Larrivee or Breedlove?

I am trying to choose an acoustic-electric that will sound very good
unplugged too. The choice seems to be between a Larrivee L03e for $875
or a Breedlove AD25/AR for $700 (both used). I think I would like either
one. Has anyone owned one or the other or played on them a lot? Any
reasons not to go with either? Thanks for your opinion.

I own one of each.

I've never played a Larrivee that I liked.

I've never played a Breedlove that didn't
make me go "WOW that's LOUD".

Breedies BOOM like a kid with a car stereo.
I like that in my 12 string.

Your Mileage May be totally sgnulistic.

Re: Larrivee or Breedlove?

I owned a Breedlove OM cutaway. Don't recall the model, but cocobolo
back and sides, spruce top.

It had the swallows inlaid at the 12th fret. Very nice guitar.
Didn't play it much so sold it to buy a jazz guitar I wanted.

I have been tempted by a couple of Larrive OMs, but they sound a bit
dull. Maybe they take more time to open up.

I think they are both well made guitar. I assume the Breedlove you
are looking at is not the MIK Atlas series.

It is a custom shop guitar ebony back and sides, red cedar top bloodwood
binding, Focus inlay. I bought it used.

The only one I have played was a smaller model. Trying to recall which one,
it was a light colored top, so it might have been spruce. Sat with it for
about an hour in a shop in Phoenix. Really sweet tone and extremely
comfortable to play. Left it there, though.

You should really try them and see.

The Larrivee is made in Canada, the Breedlove is the "Atlas" brand imported
from Asia, if that makes any difference.

You should check in rec.music.makers.guitar acoustic. I think the Larrivee
"03" series is well regarded there, don't know about the Atlas.

I don't particularly care for the Asian Breedloves. But for the price they
are not bad.

Another guitar to look at is Morgan, out of Vancouver, BC. They are
built by one of Larrivee's protege.

The Morgans that I have played were exceptionally nice players with great
sound for the price. My 2 cents.
