I think an F6 will also work in place of the Dm which is an F6 without the
5th.

Yes, you are... mostly. The band is throwing in some variations that
don't always sound intentional. The variations work, but the basic
progression is the one you describe.

Here's a youtube clip of a guy doing a nice job of singing it with
simple guitar accompaniment (and a backing track)...

Ah, ok. I'm working on putting together a cd for my s.o, hence all the song
questions.
Anyway, I think a couple of seven chords would liven up the tune a little
bit, F7 and Bb7 maybe. I'll try thm out and see once I'm back at my guitar.

THAT is a great way to arrange tunes.
Simply TRY something. Stick in a chord that's a little
different than the original. See how it sounds. If you
don't think it sounds the way you want, you haven't
lost anything. You'll use that variation in some
song you arrange tomorrow.

I sometimes rearrange songs into disco or raggae
tunes. Not because I think I'll perform them that
way, but because I want to experiment with alternate
chords or rhythms.

WARNING: Doing this will violate the "It doesn't
sound like the original" concept.

That was once the "baggy pants, exposed butt crack,
eyelid pierced look" of it's day.

Here's my possee.

Those girls with their push up bra's could kick your
butt and be back in time to hit high C at the bridge.

All the guys are in 2" platforms.

Notice the guy on my right. Just another Lumpy
hair-do wannabe.

I had a contest going with Ed Shaughnessy about
who could grow the biggest side burns.

That definitely looks like the 70's. You were a good looking kid. What
happened? Lol. Just kidding. Back then I was cursed with the Greg Brady
fro for a couple of years. Then my hair settled down. Then some of it
abandoned ship.

Give it a try - it might work. The result is likely to sound more
bluesy, less sweet than the original. Let us know if you like the way
it sounds.

You're hearing the same chords that you
hear in the Casino's tune you asked about
yesterday. Might be in a different key,
but it's 1 6 2 5 (or 1 6 4 5) in either song.

You're also hearing "I've Got Rhythm" - George Gershwin
"When You Say Nothing at All" - Alison Kraus
"Today" (while the blossoms still cling to the vine) - Randy Sparks
"The Wonder of You" - Elvis
"I Will" - Beatles
"Surfer Girl" - Beach Boys
"Love Will Keep Us Alive" - Eagles

and roughly 71 gazillion other songs.

"Surfer Girl" - Beach Boys
No, that one is in the key of d. NO B flats or c chords in there.

It's the same basic chord progression as "In the Still of the Night",
just transposed from the key of F to the key of D. The relationship
between the chords is the same. The difference is that one is centered
around an F chord, the other is centered around a D chord. That center
chord is known as The Tonic, and it defines the name and sound of the
key.

This is a very common chord progression, found in many songs and can be
played in any major key.

Play the chords to "In the Still of the Night".
Sing the melody to "Surfer Girl" or any
of the others.

They are,

one six two five.

Any key you like.

No, but it's the same progression, just in a different key, is what
Lumpy was saying.

That's what he meant by 1-6-2-5, which more conventionally would be in
roman numerals, I-vi-ii-V. In C, that gives C-Am-Dm-G-(C).
