guitar pro v5

I downloaded the software and like it, was getting ready to buy in when I
decided to check the BBB first. Well, it ends up Arobas Music is located in
France. They also want the security code for my credit card which makes me
hesitant. I don't think I can get my bank to battle foreign transactions if
they decided to rip me off. Has anyone had any problems?

I purchased GP 5.1 a few years ago via web download and a US credit
card. There were no problems at all with the transaction.

They advertised free upgrades for all 5.x versions, and they have
followed through with email alerts whenever they release a new
revision.

If you're really concerned about securing your credit card, you can
use PayPal to shield your information.

Seems to be a reputable outfit. I would recommend doing business with
them.

I purchased the Mac version a year or so ago and had no problems with
regard to payment.

However, (speaking as a Mac user) prepare yourself for:
- A steep learning curve (loads of functions, but what does each do
and how should it work?)
- Poor documentation (key descriptions don't match, bad English, no
tutorials, etc.)
- Slow support (Email only, and it takes days and days for a reply, if
they reply)

They do offer free upgrades within versions, and they do release
updates. But, they don't seem to have very good planning skills on
their programming staff. For example, when OS-X Leopard (v10.5) was
released, GP 5 stopped working. It took 6-8 weeks for a working
version to appear on the web site. That's really quite unsettling.

Still, it's a powerful program if you can push through the learning
curve and don't require support.

I second that. I'm in Germany however and so somewhat nearer to France.

Right, but in the end there really are loads of possibilities. And the
"Realistic Sound Engine" reaaly adds some nice sound options (ain't
exactly lean though).

Yep. Getting the hang of the keyboard shortcuts really speeds things up.
Using the program by mouse only can be kind of awkward.

Do you also suffer from occasional crashes? GP5 is about the only progam
on my Mac (OSX 10.4) that crashes. Especially when working with imported
GP3 files or when using the L command (tie).

Erik,

Crashes aren't a problem since they fixed it to actually run on 10.5,
but I've never imported files and my use is rather limited.

My 'now why did that crash?' program is Firefox.

Guitar pro has been around for many years, in the last year, it
began to be marketed by Arobas.
They are not a fly by night operation, and it is a bonefied company.
There can be problems with any internet purchase,
I use debit cards you buy at, like Wal-mart or Wallgreens for internet
purchases, and keep my credit card numbers off of the internet.

or
Go to
alt.binaries.guitar.tab
request a post of Guitar pro.
you will have within a day or two free of charge.

Unfortunately, you'll also be stealing.

The Power Tab editor is freeware, and it's available from

* w w w .power-tab . net /guitar.php

Power Tab can't hold a candle to Guitar Pro. You can write an entire song
with all instruments in Guitar Pro.

Re: guitar pro v5

I've been a customer of theirs for years. Every company asks for the
security code. It's good software.

Go for it.

After purchase, make sure you download the main program, and all three of
the RSE engines. You need them all.

Also, floating around on the net is an archive with over 56,000 GP files in
it. Better than any tab collection.

I got it and no problems with payment or identity theft. BTW, everybody
asks for that security code on the back of your card. Since they put it
there I have yet to buy anything on the net or mail order without having to
give it. It's actually a safety feature that protects the cardholder.

I have been asked to give mine several times for internet purchases,
including those made from Australian and American companies. Not all of
them ask for it, but many do.
