Bad amp/Good amp.

Bad amp/Good amp.

Most people who have been playing in bands have tube amps.
The other guitar player in my band has a ss Fender amp that sounds
terrible.
So he brought his tube amp to rehearsal.
Pignose 60 watt.
Pretty cool looking.
This is one horrible sounding amp.
It hums and hisses, is way too bright, Distorts badly.
He insists on using it.
We had a recording session Sunday at a studio and he brought his
Pignose.
They put a good mic in front of it and it is a totally different amp.
Gets in to Marshall cranked Plixi territory.
One of the best recording amps I ever heard.

I'd heard years ago that many of the big guitar sounds were recorded with
Fender Champs. I know for a fact from my days opening for big acts that
many of the on-stage speaker stacks were not plugged in, in some cases were
just empty cabs, and in other cases the visible amps were not used, but the
signal fed to a small backstage amp miked into the system.

That's why this whole thing is called "show" business.

I'll bet it wasn't Hendix, or The Who, or Zepplin, or SRV.......( its
just not the same - and that all I have to say about that ) ....ed s.

At least two major rock acts that use small amps mic'ed up behind a huge
stack of Marshalls.

I know that one of them uses a Cornford Harlequin

Eric Clapton's first solo album and Layla guitars were played through a
Champ.

Frank Zappa sometimes liked to record with his battery-operated
Pignose.

Brian May has recorded many of his guitar parts with his little
transisorized home-built (by bassist John Deacon) Deaky Amp.

A friend of mine regularly plays through a Fender Super Champ. It does,
indeed, sound fabulous! I've been looking for one of those for myself,
but they are rare.

One time, many years ago, my main amp, a 60-watt Mesa/Boogie, failed on
a gig, so I resorted to a borrowed Fender Champ. Plugged into an
extension speaker cabinet, and turned all the way up, it sounded great!
And loud enough (almost.)

Not in jazz, not in acoustic bands, you will find many ss amps. Rock
and country, yes I would agree.

Almost all of those guys put ss effects pedals in front of those tube
amps. So tube sound or ss or a combo of both?

It's 'tube' (I'm British, I was taught to call them valves) output stage
distortion that is the sought after sound.

Overdriven valve preamp stages aren't quite as nice, but some people like
them.

Overdriven solid state 'anything much' sounds rubbish and overdrive digital
stuff sounds like a cat trying to claw through a sewn up elephant's bottom,
from the inside...

Hah! And I was hoping someone would come up with a stomp box for that
effect.

I believe you may be right, if anything can produce that effect the "Scrotum
Smasher" sounds like it should do the job.

But even with three valves, aren't we just emulating the sound?
Modeling it in analog, if you will? I say nothing substitutes for a
real cat, a real elephant, and real sutures. In fact, someone with a
trained ear would insist upon natural sutures, not cheap synthetic
imitations.
