What's a nylon folk guitar?

I saw some strings on Lumpy's site that were described as being for
either a traditional classical or a nylon folk guitar. Can someone
give me an example of a nylon folk guitar?

Thanks!

Patrick, I'm not absolutely sure, but I think it is a type of nylon
string with a *ball end* designed to be used on a folk style acoustic
guitar. It is a type of string, not a type of guitar (although Maton
made some guitar styles they described as nylon string folk guitars).

I'd say he's just referring to a fairly standard nylon strung guitar
that some people may use to play folk music. Think Willie Nelson. Not
really different from a classical guitar. Definitely not made from
nylon or, suitable for use by folk who are themselves made from nylon

Playing folk music on a violin makes it a fiddle. Playing folk music
on a classical guitar makes it a nylon (read "nylon-string") folk
guitar. Dylan uses a nylon-string guitar on his tune "Don't Think
Twice". Also, Gibson once sold a nylon-string guitar which they
referred to as a folk model. Evidently, Martin did also.

Yes, i remember nylon models, haven't seen em in a while though.

These days, classical guitars are the typical nylons. My Gypsy jazz
guitar has quasi nylons on it.

A nylon folk guitar is a guitar made for nylon people.

Pat,

It's mostly women who wear nylons. Are they nylon folk?
Back in the 60s there was a resurgence of "folk music". I recall seeing
classical guitars being marketed as folk guitars at that time. Most dorm
rooms had some sort of cheap classical guitar in those days. The owner could
play about 3 chords usually. Sort of like today's Strat Paks.

Re: What's a nylon folk guitar?

yes, but the REAL nylon folk have to have the nylons with the black
line up the back, (women only)
and the little hookie things up on top and this belt thing and stuff -
it's really complicated....
but the black line is NOT a nylon string...

pantyhose don't count unless it's being thrown at you ...

i mean, not the hose part, just....
well, see you don't wanna get hosed, and - sorry, see what happens
when you get old?

Re: What's a nylon folk guitar?

I remember black nylon strings with ball ends. Classic strings
typically do not have ball ends.

Weren't these strings for folk guitars?

In my experience, folk strings are sometimes called "Silk and Steel"
strings...often they have lower tension than normal bronze or nickel
wounds and, for this reason, you can often find them on beginners
guitars. At the same time, there is indeed a legitimate use for silk
and steel that goes beyond comfort and enters the realm of tone...they
sound nice and mellow and are really nice for intricate fingerpicking.
May faves are D'Adds J40's. These are particularly suited to smaller
body 000 type axes. very nice. they all have ball ends, or you can
always tie a knot in a nylon set...once tensioned, it won't come
undone on its own....the silk and steel have steel stringed treble but
silk wound bass strings (EAD and sometimes G).

Cheers, CS

I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to think of a nylon-stringed
"folk" guitar as being similar to a classical except that it has a
narrower neck. Traditional classicals have necks that are wider than
most other acoustic guitars, but I have a Framus classical (folk?) with
a pretty narrow neck. For me, it's easier to play.
