Capo Recommendations?

Capo Recommendations?

Hi

Can anyone recommend a quality capo for acoustic (ovation) guitar? I don't
want to mark the neck and there seems a HUGE range to choose from!
Thanks
Dennis

Re: Capo Recommendations?

Shubb capos have been an industry standard for many years, so you
can't go wrong there.

I don't use one very much, as I prefer to find voicings that fit
without one, but when I do, I reach for the Keyser these days.

I don't know of any of them that will mar the neck.

Using a capo is very unlikely to "mark" the neck. You needn't
worry about that.

I've got a bunch of them, but really, they all work about as
well. Maybe the adjustable Shubb is most precise, but I like
the spring loaded ones like the Kyser and Dunlop because I can
clamp them on the headstock when I'm not using them.

Just get a name brand one, and don't Fret over it.

I can't say I've sampled a lot of them, but right now I'm using a Kyser
similar to the one that Nil posted. It does the trick for me, and I
can't complain. And no, it won't ding up your neck.

I use both Shubb and Kyser, the latter is bright red so I can't lose it so
easily.

and just to round out the confusion, I use a Dunlop on a 6 and a 12
string guitar. I use a Kyser short capo too. It's kind of like
olives, ya just gotta sample them and stick with what you like. I
have heard that Shubb is the standard to judge by, but I don't have
any problems with the Dunlop.

Maybe that explains why I don't use capos much, I hate olives! :-)

Ironically, I was handed some music yesterday that will get played
Sunday, where my part includes some uptempo open string licks that
will be tough to do without capoing at the 3rd fret.

I went hunting for my capos, and my Shubb's rubber had dried out
completely, so I grabbed the Kyser. Guess I need to buy a replacement
grip for the Shubb.

I had once, seen a Capo that you can have it press down on all or only,
the strings that you want it to press down; I do not remember its brand
/ name, but reading this post reminded me of seeing this Capo. I was
just, curious if anyone else is aware of a Capo of this type, and what
the opinions of this type of Capo are.

Re: Capo Recommendations?

I've got Shubbs in all flavors,
roller or original, brass, nickel, stainless,
6 and 12 string style.

I also have Dunlop triggers in "faux wood"
finish. The outer surface of the capo is
photo finished, like those Jap Fender finishes,
to look like either rosewood or maple. It's
a really cool looking effect, I think.

I like the Dunlop triggers for quick changes
a little better than the Kysers, simply because
the trigger sits BEHIND the neck on the Dunlop,
where it sits in FRONT of the neck on the Kysers.

I like the Shubbs for multi capo or partial capo
stuff or for when I'm not going to be moving
the capo quickly. I adjust the Shubb so that it
exerts minimum pressure necessary to sound the
notes cleanly. So they intonate just a tiny bit
better than a non-adjustable capo.

Shubbs are $22, Dunlops are $18.90 from my
favorite, outspoken, online music goody dealer.

One thing I like about the Kyser is that most of its mechanical
business is in front of the neck, so there's less for my hand to bump
into behind the neck. The protruding trigger of the Dunlop sometimes
gets in the way of my thumb when I'm playing down near it.

You might be thinking of the Third Hand Capo:

http :// www .musiciansfriend,com /product/Third-Hand-Capo-Universal-Partial-Guitar-Capo?sku=361130

Also, some capos are designed in such a way that you can clamp them
on a bit off-sides to they leave the top or bottom string or two
ringing open.

There are also partial capos with a short pad that are intended
to cover only a few of the inner strings, such as the Kyser
Short Cut:

http :// www .musiciansfriend,com /product/Kyser-Shortcut-Partial-Capo?sku=361606

I have one of these that I got when I went to see guitarist Randall
Williams ( http :// www .whereisrandall,com /) play. He's big into capos
of all kinds, especially partial capos, and he sometimes uses several
capos at once. He let me play his guitar and showed me a couple of
tricks involving multiple capos, so I bought a Sort Cut. I still haven't
spent much time with it, yet.

Works fine until you change chords.
