Fretboard Damage?

Fretboard Damage?

I like using a small amount of baby oil on each fingertip of my left
hand.... . it keeps my playing very smooth.

I'm thinking that.....if its safe to put on a baby then it shouldn't
cause damage to the fingerboard?

Interestingly enough, my bottle of baby oil states
"Keep out of reach of childred"

I don't really think you should do that.
Play like an every average guitar player - WITHOUT THE BABY OIL

It might damage the fretboard, and it will certainly kill the strings by
clogging them up with gunk.

I wouldn't do it. But if you want oil, why baby oil? Mineral oil at least
doesn't have the fragrance. I'd also think that it would keep the strings dirty
and kill tone. As well as causing gunk to build up at the frets.

They do make products for this purpose (finger ease is one of them), but I've
never tried them.

A Google search for "GHS Fast Fret mineral oil" yields a number of
reviews that suggest that Fast Fret contains mineral oil.

I didn't find any claiming to have done a lab analysis, however. The
GHS website doesn't tell you what's in the product, so caveat lector.

I'll tell you exactly what's in it.
I'm a GHS dealer.

Mineral oil and naptha.
Somewhere I have the ratio but
it's a tiny bit of oil to a large amount
of naptha. The theory behind Fast Fret is
that the oil dissolves any oily dirt on
the strings (thin oil dissolves thicker oil).
Then the naptha thins the mineral oil and causes
the mix to sit on the outside surface of the strings
where you wipe it away with a cloth (like the one
that comes in a Fast Fret tube).

I've had one of my personal Fast Frets since about
1994. It still works just fine. I've never had to
clean it or add anything to the felt applicator.
Which suggests that buying one of the darn things
is a lot more cost effective than trying to
roll your own.

No doubt, muso will find a way to make one
out of household items.

Ah, ok. I had reasoned that if a commercial product that went on
strings contained mineral oil, then baby oil (which is mostly mineral
oil) would be safe. If the amount is that small, though, it probably
doesn't mean much.

85W-140 certainly has fragrance, and a schooner a day will make your voice
really smooooth, just make sure you don't cough or sneeze...

RD,

There is a series of products that do not damage the fretboard and are
meant to be used like this. I think one of them is Finger Ease. I was not
impressed with them but see what you think.

Fingerease also works great on baby asses and knees. Their 'output' wipes right
off their skin and they can glide across hardwood floors like slobbering little
hovercraft, much better than J&J baby oil.

Naw w w w....just kidding. (CPS don't come knockin' at my door)

Nix the baby oil - try a product called Fast Fret or Fret Ease...if you
MUST use a lubricant...

Won't hurt anything. May darken your fretboard a little bit.
