Deformed Fingertips

Deformed Fingertips

Hi. Recently I've started to learn basic chords. Em, D, G, etc.
Yesterday I practiced diligently. However when I woke up this
morning, I ran my right hand fingers over my left hand finger tips,
and found that they still had string indentations 'carved' into the
flesh? Is this normal? Will it go away? Should I rest for a day or
a few days? Or can I keep on truckin'?

Yes, it's normal. It means that callus is building up.

> Will it go away?

Once the callus is thick enough, they won't dent as easily.

> Should I rest for a day or a few days? Or can I keep on truckin'?

Rest them if they hurt or if the skin cracks or bleeds or otherwise
seems to be in real distress, but otherwise keep on keepin' on. If
there's a real problem (unlikely), you will know it.

The callus may pop off after a while, but they will return.

I've been on the guitar for about 4 months now and I find that my
fingertips still get a bit tender, however I only notice it when I am
not playing.
I don't get the string marks on my fingertips like I did when I
started, but I did get the same as the OP described for the first
several weeks.

I made a point of not stopping when my fingers started to hurt. I would
say it is a bit like any physical training, a little pain, a lotta'
gain. :)

As a beginner, it comes and goes. They crack, bleed, heal, dent,
peel, and start over. This goes on for...years. Then they settle in,
there's callous but it's not as thick as it used to be. They never
hurt.

Been playing for...uhm...39 years...they still crack and
bleed...particularly when they get too thick and I bite them off...dunno
why...I just do it and it hurts me everytime. Problem is, I start to loose
feeling in the tips and that starts to get annoying, so I take little nips
and they start to wander towards the edge of the callouses and then, I can
tell you, it gets very tender. Not recommended, but it seems I am not as
smart as a dog and do not seem to learn from pain. Well...that was
cathartic.

Cheers, Jean

...as long as you're not curling with them, I think you'll be ok.

If there is numbness, quit until it goes away. Otherwise, boogie on.
