Using a PC for guitar?

Using a PC for guitar?

I've been using PC's and software to make music professionally for a
long time, but I've never paid attention to the guitar side of things.

I saw this:
* eshop.macsales . com /item/DVForge/GUITARPLUG/

So what kinds of things do you use the PC for, other than recording?
Can you get good realtime effects? I have a pretty fast, new machine.

Just wondering what's out there. Since all my guitar playing is done
near the PC, it could be cool to use software instead of pedals.

Guitar rig is AWESOME. It costs about £150 but the options are mind
boggling.

check out a demo

Yeah, I was just looking at that. Too Cool!
I have a friend who works at Sweetwater, but I'm not good enough to
justify that cost yet.

There's also Amplitube2. There's a deal right now from IK Multimedia if
you buy one plugin you get another free.

Am I better off running into my sound card's line in?
Or should I use a USB adapter?

I have a Gina 24 in my studio, but this PC is upstairs in the sunroom.
It's just got Realtek integrated audio. But I do have a SB Audigy in
an unused PC.

I would be inclined to use the Audigy. Also the audigy has its own
soundfonts if you want to indulge in MIDI work.

as a beginner I worked with an audigy for ages and never really had any
problems when recording. It depends on your budget really, If you can afford
another device, then consider it. If you were a total beginner then I would
say Audigy is fine, but having a studio, it suggests you are a bit further
along :-)

I'd use the Gina. It's still a great card.

Ditch the Audigy. You want a card designed for higher end audio and
recording. Check out M-Audio. You get nice things like 0 latency and
real-time monitoring. Trust me, you won't look back. 8-). I go
straight from the back of my amp into the board.

I've got a digital recording studio downstairs. I was just hoping for
something quick and dirty here on this "general purpose" PC.

There's Griffin's instument cables if you use the audio in:

* w w w .griffintechnology . com /products/instrumentcables

...or their iMic:

* w w w .griffintechnology . com /products/imic

Then there's the Lightsnake cables from SoundTech:

* w w w .soundtech . com /products/home-recording

...and a whole host of other interface gadgets. Not to mention freeware
for recording.

I use a Mac (laptop)...so along with Garage Band and other recording
apps for doing scratch recording, I also use it for backing up and
organizing patches for any multi-effects box I have that has a USB
interface (like a Line 6 Pod X3L or XTL). I also use it as a MIDI
sniffer and analyzer, MIDI controller, drum machine, to catalog and
transport lyric and tab sheets, cabling drawings for PA and stage set
ups, diagramming my own amp rig, hooked into the PA for practice instead
of an iPod (because I can carry around my whole music collection on it),
drawing scale and chord charts, drafting my own songs and lyric sheets...

...but I'd never use it for real-time performance effects...unless I
played keys, which I don't. I'm back to using pure analog pedals, and
they make all the digital stuff I plug in next to them sound like crap.

Mitch,

My PC and it's software function as a good guitar tuner and a good
metronome.
The metronome helps to assess proper rhythm during porn.

"Using a PC for guitar?"

I tried, but it didn't look as cool when I slung it low.

Besides, after all that typing, my fingers began getting deformed/
muscle bound.

It's also difficult to busk with that tower
strapped to your backside.

Not to mention having to drag that extension cord around everywhere.
