When purchasing acoustic Guitars, it's better to get a cutaway.

When purchasing acoustic Guitars, it's better to get a cutaway.

It is better to have an acoustic with a cutaway neck so that you can
access the higher frets.

I have an old Guild which has limited access -- especially for barre
chords-- on the higher frets. I wish my teacher had mentioned the
limitation when he sold me the guitar.

Some argue the cutaway design affects the tone (I can't hear it).

Other that that, there's no reason not to get a cutaway.

Everyone likes to play on higher frets once in a while.

I like a cutaway. Some don't find it necessary. I don't think it
necessarily affects the sound in a negative way. I've heard lots of
beautiful guitars with cutaways.

"Better" or not is completely up to you.

Good thinking - wrong conclusion.

This is the reason why we should own two acoustics.

the cutaway gives the guitar a more interesting and attractive
appearance, also, I believe.

Actually, I think it's pretty dumb thinking.

"the teacher should have mentioned the limitation"...
Geez, Ravi. Take a little responsibility here. If you want,
for some reason, to play barre chords on the 12th fret
then engage a little brain cell and it slams you in the
face that "Oh, my hand won't go there.

That's not a limitation on the part of the guitar.
Nor did the teacher "fail to mention" anything.

OK I will take responsibility.

I was in high school, just learning and didn't know much...

Now I know that I prefer to have easy access to the higher frets.

I like where this is going. Add alternate tunings to the equation and
5 or 6 acoustics could be justified. I have a bunch & I enjoy playing
each of them!

When taking Royal Conservatory (classical) exams,
they doc marks for using a guitar with a cutaway.

Re: When purchasing acoustic Guitars, it's better to get a cutaway.

About 3-4 years ago I found a smokin deal on a Santa Cruz Guitar Co
prewar OM.

Great shape, played like a dream, very balanced sound from the
bearclawed spruce top and Indian Rosewood back & sides.

Guy who owned it was a store employee, got it cheap, never played it.
I lucked out.

As much as I loved this guitar, I learned I really need a cutaway with
the way I play. I could live with it, but I didn't.

Ebayed it to a guy across the country and used the $ to buy something
else. Each to his own.
